Tuesday night highly touted Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Roansy Contreras made his second start for Double-A Altoona since returning from the injured list

According to MLB Pipeline the 6th ranked prospect that the Pittsburgh Pirates have is right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras. Tuesday night he made his second start with Double-A Altoona since returning from the injured list.

Tuesday night Contreras had a good day on the mound against the Erie Sea Wolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Contreras allowed an unearned run on 3 hits, a walk and 4 strikeouts in 3 innings pitched. This outing lowered his ERA on the season to 2.29.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will require major upgrades with starting and relief pitching during the offseason, and knowing how the team doesn’t really target any helpful free agents, the best guess is that they will look to their 40-man roster and minor teams for some help.

Contreras is a candidate to start the next MiLB season with Pittsburgh’s Triple-A affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians, but if he is still being held back by having a low pitch or inning count, he could remain with Altoona and be promoted early in the season next year. A spot might be opening up in Indy anyway because Miguel Yajure could make the starting roster next year, then Contreras could be ready later in the season.

Spring training 2022 will be the next check-in point for Contreras after the current season concludes. He will be fully healed and ready to throw without restrictions when he arrives in Bradenton.

The Pirate offseason agenda will be full, the team needs a new hitting coach, the Rule 5 Draft will take place, one of the most exciting free agency classes in the last decade will make available top players, players whose contracts will likely be terminated, promotions, and preparing for the next season. 2022 should see the arrival of Contreras and other Pittsburgh Pirates prospects, but Contreras should be the headliner in those promotions.
