Right-handed pitching prospect, Roansy Contreras has been one of a few positives this year for the Pittsburgh Pirates and their farm system. On Wednesday against the Cubs, he will make his highly anticipated MLB debut.
According to Hector Gomez, MLB insider from the Dominican Republic, Roansy Contreras is expected to make his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night at PNC Park against the Chicago Cubs.
Contreras was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates on January 24th 2021 from the New York Yankees in exchange for Jameson Taillon. He was not the only player that came to the Pirates on that deal. shortstop Maikol Escotto, right-handed pitcher Miguel Yajure, outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba were also a part of that trade.
On March 16th, Contreras was optioned to High-A Greensboro, but on April 30th, he was quickly reassigned to Double-A Altoona. May 4th is when Contreras made his debut with the Curve and he showed exactly why Ben Cherington and the Pirates wanted him in the trade. He pitched 5 innings allowing 5 hits giving up 0 earned runs with 11 strikeouts. That caught a lot of fans eyes.
With the Altoona Curve, Contreras played and started in 12 games where he had a 3-2 record with an impressive 2.65 era. He pitched a total of 54.1 innings striking out 76 batters and only allowing 12 walks. Unfortunately for Contreras and fans, he was placed on the 7-day IL and did not pitch in July or August of this year.
On September 1st 2021, he was reactivated and from the injury list and soon after was called up to Triple-A Indy. In one game with the Indians, he pitched 3.2 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run. He also struck out 6 batters and allowed only 1 walk.
According MLB Pipeline, Contreras is ranked as the #6 overall prospect in the Pirate system. I am eager to see how he does on Wednesday night. I think this is a good match up for Contreras and believe he will turn some heads after this game.
