Thursday evening it was reported that the Pittsburgh Pirates are promoting 2020 draft pick Carmen Mlodzinski from High-A Greensboro to Triple-A Indianapolis to finish the 2021 season

Promoting players up levels in their minor league system has caused some big pieces of news for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the last two weeks. Back on September 19th the Pirates promoted eight players from Double-A Altoona to Triple-A Indianapolis. Now, Indianapolis is adding another exciting Pirate prospect.

Carmen Mlodzinski, a right-handed pitcher the Pittsburgh Pirates selected with a first-round comp pick in the 2020 MLB draft, has been promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis. This move comes as a bit of a surprise as Mlodzinski will be making the jump from High-A Greensboro all the way to Triple-A.

This move could simply be due to the Pittsburgh Pirates looking to get Mlodzinski a few more innings before the season ends due to Mlodzinski missing time this season with injury.

In 14 starts with Greensboro this season Mlodzinski posted a 3.93 ERA, 4.34 FIP, 9.4% walk rate and a 30.0% strikeout rate in 50.1 innings pitched. Mlodzinski allowed home runs at just a 1.25 HR/9 rate, while inducing ground balls at a strong 42.9% rate.

Mlodzinski being moved to Triple-A is a move that can certainly be made for something more than just getting Mlodzinski more work this season. He is 22-years-old, will be 23 by Opening Day 2022, and came to the Pirates as an advanced pitcher.

The big righty pitched collegiately with the South Carolina Gamecocks and had great success pitching in the Cape Cod League in 2019. For these reason Mlodzinski projected as a pitcher who could rise through the Pirate farm system in a hurry.

Mlodzinski could be ready to join the Pirate rotation at soem point in 2022. This could lead to him hanging on with the Indians and starting the 2022 season there. At worst, he will start the 2022 season with Double-A Altoona and should join Indy before the end of the season.
