While the Pittsburgh Pirates were busy this past trade deadline they did not move star center fielder Bryan Reynolds despite an AL West club’s efforts to land the All-Star
Prior to the July 31st trade deadline the Pittsburgh Pirates were busy on the trade market. While the team made multiple trades in late July one trade that was not made was any trade involving All-Star center fielder Bryan Reynolds.
It had already been reported that the Miami Marlins made a push for Reynolds, only for the Pittsburgh Pirates to ask for an astronomical package of prospects in return. In turns out the Marlins are not the only club this happened with.
On a recent podcast of Shannon Drayer and James Osborn of ESPN 710 out of Seattle, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times joined the show. Divish reported that the Seattle Mariners attempted to acquire Reynolds from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline.
The player that Divish reports the Pirates wanted in return for Reynolds was outfield prospect Julio Rodríguez. The 20-year-old Rodríguez is rated as Seattle’s top prospect, and the 6th best prospect in all of baseball, by FanGraphs. This goes in line with the big asking price general manager Ben Cherington and the Pirates had for Reynolds at the trade deadline.
This is the right move for the Pirates to take in terms of any potential Reynolds trades. Reynolds is a player that they should be looking to build around moving forward, the only way he should be traded is if it is to net a massive return that borders on being an overpay.
Hopefully this offseason the Pirates will be able to complete an extension with Reynolds. The switch hitting outfielder is becoming a superstar in the game of baseball and should be the team’s biggest building block as their next window of contention opens in the next 2 years or so.
