Former top 100 prospect Bryse Wilson has yet to have the opportunity to spend an entire season in a MLB starting rotation in 2022 he’ll get this opportunity with the Pittsburgh Pirates
At one point in time Bryse Wilson was a top 100 prospect with the Atlanta Braves. While he had some good moments with the Braves, specifically the 2020 postseason, he was never given an opportunity to establish himself in the team’s rotation.
At Major League Baseball’s trade deadline on July 31st of last season the Braves traded Wilson, along with Ricky DeVito, to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for reliever Richard Rodríguez. Wilson was immediately put into the Pirate starting rotation and was up and down with the Bucs.
At times Wilson flashed why he was once such a highly touted prospect. He had 5 starts in which he pitched at least 5 innings and allowed 3 earned runs or less. In these 5 starts Wilson posted a 3.00 ERA to go with 21 strikeouts and just a single home run allowed in 27 innings pitched.
In Wilson’s other 3 starts with the Pittsburgh Pirates he posted a 8.24 ERA in 13.1 innings pitched. A big factor in his struggles in these struggles was that Wilson allowed 7 home runs while striking out just 5 batters in these starts.
Right now there are plenty of spots to be had in the Pirate starting rotation. The recently signed José Quintana will be in the rotation, if he is not traded or non-tendered Steven Brault will be in the starting rotation as well. Otherwise, there are jobs to be had.
The Pirates will likely look to give Wilson, along with Miguel Yajure, a long look in 2022. This will give them each an opportunity to cement themselves as starting rotation building block for the Pirates moving forward. If not, they will get an opportunity in the bullpen.
When the 2022 season begins Wilson will find himself in the Pirate starting rotation. Odds are the Pirates will give him every opportunity in the world to pitch out of the starting rotation for an extended period of time. This will finally be Wilson’s opportunity to prove what he is or is not at the Major League level. 2022 will be a big season for Wilson, as well as being one of opportunity.
