With no clear cut answer at second base and the future quickly arriving at shortstop, who are some middle infield options for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022?

Entering the 2022 season the middle infield situation of the Pittsburgh Pirates is an odd one. While one of the two positions, shortstop, is likely locked up to start the season, there could be changes there by the end of the season.

As for second base, things are completely up in the air. The Pittsburgh Pirates do not have a clear cut favorite of front runner for second base right now. Obviously, this could change before the season begins.

After the work stoppage ends the Pirates could always look to add second base help via free agency of the trade market. However, with the organization having a plethora of young players/prospects who are or close to MLB ready, they may be content giving young players an opportunity to being to determine who is or is not part of their long-term plans.

All of that said, let’s take a look at middle infield options the Pirates currently have for the 2022 season. There are plenty of in house options for the Pirates, which could include some exciting young players earning an extended look.
