Continuing to emerge as one of the best power hitters in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system corner infielder Alexander Mojica could make a big leap in 2022

Corner infield slugging prospect Alexander Mojica is a fast rising prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system. The right-handed hitting 19-year-old Mojica could quickly become one of the best power hitting prospects in the Pirate farm system.

FanGraphs gives Mojica a raw power future value of 55. With this, Mojica should be viewed as potentially one of the best power hitting prospects in the Pirate farm system. This comes despite a poor 2021 season from the youngster.

Making the leap to the Low-A level in 2021, Mojica accumulated 339 plate appearances in 87 games played with the Bradenton Marauders. Mojica hit for a .209/.322/.341 slash line to go with a wRC+ of 87 in these 339 PAs.

While Monjica’s walk rate dropped from the 17% he posted at rookie-ball the last time he saw game action in 2019, it was still an above average rate. He drew walks at a 12.1% rate in 2021, however, the swing-and-miss was an issue. Mojcia struck out in 6.5% of his trips to the plate, and huge increase over his 15.6% strikeout rate in 2019.

His 5.9% extra base hit rate in 2021 was also a step backward from 2019 when he posted an extra base hit rate of 10.6%. All of that said, there are still reasons to be bullish on Mojica entering the 2022 season.

Looking ahead to 2022, being just 19-years-old Mojica will likely start the season with Bradenton once again. That said, the Pirates will likely want to get Mojica to High-A Greensboro as soon as they can.

Mojica will turn 20 in August. Odds are that the Pittsburgh Pirates would like to get Mojcia to Greensboro before his birthday. This would be a good test for Mojica, giving him the opportunity to face the best pitching he has in his professional career.

2022 will also be a big season for Mojica to make sure he does not teetering with fallen prospect rankings. If Mojica has another strikeout ridden season with little power shown at the plate, he will quickly become overlooked in the Pirate farm system.

If Mojica can re-discover his 2019 power stroke that made him a fast rising prospect he will establish his status within the Pirate farm system. If not, the future for Mojica most certainly becomes murky.
