Saturday night news broke that the Pittsburgh Pirates were losing a member of their coaching staff to the New York Mets

With the New York Mets looking to fill out their new coaching staff there have been multiple rumors connecting them to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The biggest of these rumors was that the Mets were interested in Pirate bench coach, and Pittsburgh native, Don Kelly for the same position.

Well, Kelly will remain with his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. Which is the same team that Kelly, the brother-in-law of Neil Walker, made his MLB debut with as a player in 2007. However, the Pirates have still lost a coach to the Mets as New York’s new bench coach.

According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, Glenn Sherlock will be named the new bench coach for the Mets.

Sherlock previously coaches for the Mets from 2017-2019. Prior to his first stint in Queens he spent 19 seasons coaching with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was originally brought to the desert by Buck Showalter, who is the new manager of the Mets.

The previous two seasons Sherlock worked primarily with Pirate catchers. This is one thing that Sherlock is noted for, and is a role he will undoubtedly take on with the Mets. During his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Sherlock helped Jacob Stallings turn into a Gold Glove winning catcher.

Losing Sherlock creates an opening on the Pirate coaching staff. Derek Shelton will now work to fill this position. It would not be a surprise to see Shelton attempt to target someone whose background/speciality is working with catchers.
