The Pittsburgh Pirates have spent the bulk of the last two years rebuilding the team’s minor league system.  What does it look like according to the experts?

During the Neal Huntington era, Pittsburgh Pirates fans learned that it was always better to have more elite-rated talent than not.  Yes, this seems obvious but we know not every prospect works out, even the most highly touted of them.  On the flip, it is important to have prospects that are catching attention outside of the tam’s market.  If they are gaining national attention then maybe the team really does have something to look forward to.

By the end of the Neal Huntington era, the Pittsburgh Pirates only had two consensus Top 100 prospects, Mitch Keller and Ke’Bryan Hayes.  Ben Cherington has looked to improve that and through acquiring and/or developing talent he has done so.  The team’s farm system is now considered to be one of the best across the Baseball.

This remained consistent heading into 2022.  Baseball America just released their updated 2022 Top 100 Prospect list. The Pittsburgh Pirates have 6 players listed on their updated list.  This is impressive especially considering players like Hayes and Keller are no longer prospect eligible.

Here is the list for the Pittsburgh Pirates who are Top 100:

#14: Oneil Cruz, Shortstop

#41: Henry Davis, Catcher

#49: Nick Gonzales, Infield

#78: Liover Peguero, Infield

#80: Roansy Contreras, Right-Handed Pitcher

#88: Quinn Priester, Right-Handed Pitcher

These are obviously 6 names that you should recognize already, but if not take note of them in 2022.  These 6 players could very well make up a large portion of this team’s core in the future.  In fact, they have to make up the core of this team really could be in a tough spot for more years to come.

With that being said, the Pittsburgh Pirates appear to be in good hands.  The team is acquiring and developing prospects which is what the Organization needed to focus on.  The other real positive from this list is that at least 2 if not up to 4 of these prospects could make their Big League debuts in 2022.
