With Roberto Pérez slated to be the primary catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, who are the team’s options to backup for former two-time Gold Glove Award winner?

Prior to the start of Major League Baseball work stoppage the Pittsburgh Pirates were busy making roster moves. One of these moves saw the Pirates trade starting catcher, and 2021 Gold Glove Award winner, Jacob Stallings to the Miami Marlins in exchange for strong three-player package.

After Stallings was traded the Pittsburgh Pirates found themselves looking for help at the catcher position. This led to the team signing veteran catcher Roberto Pérez to a one-year contract worth $5 million. In fact, this contract is worth more than what Stallings will make in 2022.

With a two-time American League Gold Glove Award winner in Pérez slated to be the primary backstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, they will now need to find another catcher to pair with him. What options do the Pirates have for pairing a catcher with Pérez in 2022? Today, we will delve into backup catcher options for the Pirates in the upcoming 2022 season.
