It’s time to start preparing for 2022 fantasy baseball drafts! What is the outlook for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the fantasy season?

Whether you are in a rotisserie league or a category points-based league, there are some players on the Pittsburgh Pirates roster that could lead your team to victory this year. Both at the plate and on the mound, there are some rising stars in Pittsburgh ready to showcase their talent.

With that in mind, who will be the first Pirate off the board on draft day?

Chances are that will be outfielder Bryan Reynolds. Ranked as ESPN’s 10th overall outfielder. Reynolds can contribute to your fantasy team in a number of ways. Despite he and the Pittsburgh Pirates not coming to terms as far as an extension goes, the two were not far apart in terms of their arbitration figures.

According to MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman, Reynolds filed at $4.9M while the Pittsburgh Pirates filed at $4.25M. Regardless, despite the ongoing negotiations and trade talk looming, Reynolds remains a Pirate heading into the 2022 season.

Fantasy wise, owners will enjoy a sense of consistency with Reynolds as he can contribute across four categories including runs, RBI, HR and batting average. After breaking out in 2019 the Pirate center fielder took a step back in his sophomore campaign but broke out in a big way in 2021.

Reynolds posted a batting average of .302 with 24 home runs and 90 RBI, a very impressive number despite the teams’ lack of offensive production last year. Reynolds also scored 93 runs and is set up to match that this year as well as he will likely be in the two or three-hole in the Pirates’ batting order once again.

Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes

Next up is third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes. After a wrist injury cost Hayes a good portion of the 2021 season, there is a bit of uncertainty among fantasy analysts with the Pirate budding star third baseman entering the 2022 season.

As Pirate fans, however, we have seen Hayes put his abilities on display. We know what he is capable of and he is coming into the abbreviated spring training healthy and ready to go. The hope is he can build upon what he flashed in September 2020.

“Going into the offseason, I really wanted to forget about it and make sure that going into the next season my body is healthy for spring training. I’m feeling good. The wrist is feeling good, so I’m ready to get rolling,” Hayes told TribLIVE’s Kevin Gorman.

With that, Hayes could be a very nice buy-low pick as many non-Pirate fans may look elsewhere following last year’s wrist injury and below-average numbers. Despite the IL stint and lingering wrist pain throughout the year, Hayes posted a batting average of .257 to go along with 6 home runs, 38 RBI and 9 stolen bases, all numbers we can expect to go up this year. Ranked as ESPN’s no. 13 overall third baseman. Hayes may fall a little further in the draft this year compared to last, but if the young third baseman can stay healthy for a full season, you may have a top-5 fantasy third baseman on your roster.

Shortstop Oneil Cruz

Where will Oneil Cruz begin the 2022 season? Only time will tell but regardless of where he begins the season, Cruz looks poised to impact the Pittsburgh Pirates and potentially your fantasy team in a big way this year. After all, he is currently the odds on betting favorite to win National League Rookie of the Year.

The 6-foot-7 shortstop made his brief MLB debut last season and showed off his raw power and he continues to do the same right now in Bradenton as he has already hit two towering home runs on pitches that many hitters would have let go by. Cruz makes it look effortless at the plate and if he can continue this type of play, he will be a huge part of the team’s success and could impact your team as well. While the strikeout numbers may be high given this will be Cruz’s rookie campaign, the power numbers are certainly there and he is expected to be a big-time contributor in terms of driving in runs this season.

Despite his unusually large strike zone for a shortstop, minor league pitchers could not figure out how to pitch to him as he dominated at every level. Even this spring training we have seen Cruz homer on a pitch that took him down to a knee. He was seen laughing in the dugout as teammates were in awe following the home run but power like that is not to be taken for granted.

The power is remarkable and the speed is there as well as he has the ability to post double-digit steals this season. Due to his height the Pirate organization has begun working him in both left and right field, and the DH is now also an option for the NL giving the team another reason to let Cruz begin the year in Pittsburgh.

This will also benefit your fantasy team as Cruz will gain outfield eligibility. Even if Cruz does not make the Opening Day roster in Pittsburgh, he is a guy to stash on your bench until he makes his 2022 debut.

Other valuable players

If you miss out on some of the top first basemen or perhaps decide to wait and build a strong rotation, Yoshi Tsutsugo may be a surprising option this year. After struggling mightily in limited action with the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers last season, Tsutsugo signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in August where he saw consistent playing time and posted a solid .268/.347/.535 slash line in 144 plate appearances.

Tsutsugo and his home run power could also be a great add in free agency, along with newly acquired 1B/DH Daniel Vogelbach, if he is not taken on draft day as injuries happen and he wields both first base and outfield eligibility entering the 2022 season. Tsutsugo and Vogelbach will likely share time at first base and DH to begin the season with the hopes of the two providing some power numbers for the club.

On the mound the Pittsburgh Pirates have a lot of unknowns entering the 2022 season so it is difficult to rank the potential rising stars such as Roansy Contreras and Miguel Yajure, among others.

What we do know, however, is that David Bednar was very successful out of the bullpen last season and as of now, he enters the 2022 season as the Pirates’ top closing option. After posting a 2.23 ERA to go along with a 77:19 K:BB ratio, Bednar should enter the season with some confidence and if the team shows success he will be the go-to man in the 9th inning. If there is a scenario in which you miss out on some of the top closing options, Bednar could be a very good buy-low option at the end of your draft.

ESPN ranks JT Brubaker as Pittsburgh’s top fantasy starting pitcher entering the 2022 season despite posting a 5.36 ERA in 2021. Brubaker got off to a strong start in 2021 but a rough second half derailed his season as a 7.91 ERA over a 10 game stretch bruised his stat line considerably. It is worth noting that in his 11 starts at PNC Park, Brubaker posted an ERA of 3.79 so he may be worth streaming consideration for spot starts throughout the season. Given that, hopefully he can maintain the first half success that we saw in 2021for both the Pirates’ sake and your fantasy team in 2022.

In his rookie season, Zach Thompson posted an ERA of 3.24 over 75 innings last year as a member of the Miami Marlins. Thompson was acquired in the Jacob Stallings trade this offseason along with two other prospects and if he can continue his rookie year success, he could be a very valuable piece for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and your fantasy team this season. Thompson may not be a player drafted on draft day but he is certainly a pitcher to keep your eye on in the beginning of the season as his early-career success may not be a fluke.

Lastly, Mitch Keller. Following last year’s poor performance including an ERA of 6.17, some work was definitely needed in order for Keller to regain his confidence. That happened this offseason as Keller was seen hitting 100+ MPH on the radar gun. Certainly, that is encouraging for the Pirate organization as Keller is clearly healthy and doing what he can to put everything together, but where does that leave Keller in terms of a fantasy perspective? Most likely, Keller won’t be drafted on draft day but that does not mean that he couldn’t be on rosters as the season progresses. Entering his age-26 season and despite his early struggles, it is too soon to give up on Keller, but a “wait and see” scenario is likely all he will be given entering the 2022 fantasy season.

To begin the year, the Pittsburgh Pirates may not have a long list of players that will prominently impact your fantasy roster, but what will be exciting to see is if and when some of these young Pirate prospects will be scooped up from the waiver wire this season.
