At 4:15 PM ET on Thursday afternoon the 2022 edition of the Pittsburgh Pirates will begin to embark on a 162 game journey. While it remains to be seen where this journey will take them, even with expectations being low, there is sure to be plenty of excitement along the way.
The Pittsburgh Pirates will kick off their 2022 season by playing their divisional rival St. Louis Cardinals in a four-game series from Busch Stadium. Over the course of the last decade the Pirates and Cardinals have seemingly played one thrilling series after another. Even in seasons where the Pirates have been a sub-.500 club this has been the case.
History says this could be a very exciting series to begin a season with. Even with the changes of the offseason, and the Cardinals looking like postseason contenders while the Pirates are expected to finish below .500 for a fourth consecutive season, it is still two teams and organizations that know each other very well.
Most importantly, baseball is back. For large portions of the offseason, and even into the spring, having baseball back appeared to be far from a given. Despite the start late to the season this will be the closest MLB has been to having a “normal” season since 2019, so let’s sit back and enjoy the ride.
