Wednesday night three pitchers joined together to throw a combined no-hitter for the top farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates – the Indianapolis Indians
The first no-hitter of the minor league baseball season is now in the books. While it was a combined no-hitters by three different pitchers it was still a no-no. This no-hitter has been tossed by the Pittsburgh Pirates top minor league affiliate – the Indianapolis Indians.
Chase De Jong started for the Indians and pitched 7 no-hit innings. The veteran righty walked a pair and struck out 9 in his 7 innings of work. De Jong was followed by Austin Brice who struck out a batter in a 1-2-3 inning. Yerry De Los Santos then continued his dominant start to the season by striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 9th inning. On the season De Los Santos has now retired all 12 batters he has faced, while recording 6 strikeouts in his 4 scoreless innings pitched.
With their 5-0 no-hit victory over the St. Paul Saints the Indians are now 6-2 on the season. With how talented Indy’s roster is this season it is not a surprise to see the Pirate Triple-A affiliate off to a hot start.
Offensively, Indianapolis was led by their usual cast of characters. While he was 0-for-4 at the plate, Oneil Cruz still scored a run and picked up a RBI. Rodolfo Castro was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a solo home run. Mason Martin was 1-for-4 with a double while Cal Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a double, they combined to drive in 3 runs.
Congrats to the three pitchers involved, as well as the entire Indianapolis pitching staff for this achievement. A tip of the cap also goes out to the Indian defense on Wednesday night for having a flawless night.
