Derek Shelton is cultivating a strong culture

During the first two season with Shelton at the helm we have talked about the culture that he, along with general manage Ben Cherington have been looking to cultivate in Pittsburgh. While the Pirates have finished below .500 in both seasons with Shelton and Cherington in place you could still see their culture being cultivated.

The team never gives up under Shelton’s leadership. In fact, they were among MLB’s leaders in come from behind victories in 2021. Well, so far this season the Pittsburgh Pirates are once again among the best at come backs.

Pittsburgh has come from behind in each of their 5 victories this season. Against the Nationals over the weekend they did not just come from behind in each victory, they over came a 3-0 deficit after the top of the 1st inning on Thursday and after the top of the 2nd inning on Sunday. In each of these games they easily could have just folded up and called it a night. Instead, in each game they battled back for a victory.

Will the Pirates finish over .500 this season? No. That said, you can see the positive culture change that was needed following the 2019 season continuing to be cultivated. Shelton and his staff deserve a lot of credit for that. This should also help create a lot more fun moments than we have seen the past two seasons. The Battlin’ Bucs of 2022 never gave up in this series.
