One of the Pittsburgh Pirates second-round picks from 2019 has really put together a strong start to the season.  He is playing with the Altoona Curve.

In 2019 the Pittsburgh Pirates relieved General Manager Neal Huntington of his duties.  While he was let go for good reason, Huntington’s final Draft class could prove to be a very impactful one. The Buc’s first-round pick was top pitching prospect, Quinn Priester who has developed as such.  They also drafted 2021 breakout prospect Matthew Fraizer in the 3rd round.

The team had multiple top draft picks in 2019.  They had a competitive balance B pick, which falls after the second round.  The Pittsburgh Pirates used the #72 overall pick in the 2019 Draft on third baseman Jared Triolo. Trilo was selected out of the Unversity of Houston.

Triolo has worked his way up through the minor leagues and is now playing with the Double-A Altoona Curve.  The third baseman has turned into one of the team’s better infield prospects, showing above-average defense in the infield. His bat has also come along each season in the minors.

Over the course of his minor league career, Triolo has put together a really strong resume.  His career slash line is .281/.353/.436 which is good for an OPS just under .800. This is really impressive considering in 2020 he only hit .239 across 60 games.  Since his numbers have just gone up.

This year with the Altoona Curve Triolo is off to a really strong start once again. So far he has played in 18 games and has recorded 19 hits. He has a slash line of .279/.380/.324.  Obviously, the power is not there, but he continues to have productive at-bats while getting on base a lot.

Trilo’s plate discipline has been odd so far this year.  He has walked 9 times already but also has struck out 19 times.  Also, his power has not really shown up and it’s because he is hitting too many groundballs.  His ratio of groundballs to flyballs is 1 to 1, he needs to hit more flyballs. Hopefully, he will start the lift the ball as the temperature heats u.p.  If he can he could turn into a legitimate big-league player.
