Other Pittsburgh Pirates minor league action

Triple-A Indianapolis blew out the Charlotte Knights 15-3, improving to 5-14 on the season. Trey McGough started for the Indians, allowing 2 hits, walking a batter and striking out 3 in 4 scoreless innings pitched. McGough now has an 0.75 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched this season.

Offensively, Canaan Smith-Njigba, Mason Martin, Jared Oliva and Ji-Hwan Bae all hit doubles for the Indians. Oliva also hit a grand slam. All of this was part of a three hit effort for Bae and Oliva, and a four hit night for Smith-Njigba.

Rodolfo Castro also joined in on the grand slam train for his 2nd home run of the season raising his OPS on the season to .799. With playing time available in the middle infield it would be intriguing to see the Pittsburgh Pirates give Castro another MLB chance soon. Even though he did not record a hit, Oneil Cruz did draw 3 walks.

High-A Greensboro was also victorious, improving to 12-15 on the season with a 6-4 victory over one time Pittsburgh Pirates farm club the Hickory Crawdads.

First baseman Jacob Gonzalez made his season debut for the Grasshoppers after raking at Low-A Bradenton, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a double a home run, and 4 RBI. There may not be a hitter in the Pirate farm system hotter at the plate to start the season than Gonzalez.

Outfielder Hudson Head also hit a double, and Matt Gorski tripled while drawing a walk. Jack Herman and Abrahan Gutierrez each drove in a run as well. Catcher Endy Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a walk.

It was a strong night for the Grasshopper bullpen as Wandi Montout, Nick Dombkowski, Ricky DeVito and Tyler Samaniego combined to allow a run on 3 hits, a walk and 9 strikeouts. This group came up huge in the victory.
