The Pittsburgh Pirates will have the fourth overall pick and fourth-highest bonus pool for the 2022 Draft.  Who could they look to select?

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the rest of the Major League Baseball would typically be preparing for the Draft, which would be taking place just a few weeks from now.  Instead, there is still well over a month before the Draft will occur.  This year the Draft will once again be a part of All-Star weekend spanning over July 17th, 18th, and 19th.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have the fourth overall selection in the 2022 Draft.  Ben Cherington will once again be in a position to bring in a high-caliber prospect.  A few weeks ago I wrote an article of my own mock and had the Pittsburgh Pirates selecting college shortstop Brooks Lee.  MLB Pipeline has now put out their updated mock and they seem to agree:

“4. Pirates: Brooks Lee, SS, Cal Poly (No. 5)Johnson would be the high school bat the Pirates could look at if the other three prep hitters are gone. Lee is the best college bat in the class and Pittsburgh could make it three straight first-round picks spent on an advanced hitter.”

Now, this pick still makes a lot of sense for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Lee is a player capable of playing up the middle meaning he would be able to move positions if necessary.  Also, the Front Office seems to prefer taking college prospects with their top picks, which has been evident with the Pirates but also during their time with the Blue Jays.

Obviously, a lot can change as we are just under 2 months away from the Draft.  This once again is a huge Draft for the Pittsburgh Pirates as they try to bring in a consistent pipeline of talent.  Whether it is Lee or someone else, the team should get a big talent with their selection.
