Following a terrible weekend series at PNC Park against the St. Louis Cardinals the Pittsburgh Pirates are now a season worst 8 games under .500 at 16-24

It was a long, rough weekend for the Pittsburgh Pirates at home. Hell, it would not be a stretch to call it an embarrassing weekend for the Pirates. It was one of the worst series played by the Pirates so far in 2022.

The Pittsburgh Pirates were swept by the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend, falling to 16-24 on the season. This puts the squad at a season worst 8 games under .500, and 3-7-3 in their 13 series played.

Pittsburgh was outscored 28-11 in the series. While a majority of this came due to the team being whipped 18-4 on Sunday, with the only 4 runs they scored coming in the 9th inning with an almost 40-year-old Yadier Molina pitching, there were plenty of other snafus along the way.

Friday night the Pirates had the bases loaded with no one out trailing 5-2, but after a ground out and a pair of strikeouts the Pirates failed to capitalize. Saturday night a poor 2nd inning was highlighted by a Rodolfo Castro error and a defensive blunder by Ke’Bryan Hayes. Even in the closes losses there were some very poor moments for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

With all of that said, let’s get into recapping the series with some key takeaways.
