A big weekend for the young Bucs

As we said above the improvement in play has coincided with the promotion of young Pirate prospects. This past weekend plenty of young Bucs played a big role in the team taking two of three from Arizona.

Roansy Contreras started on Saturday, allowing an unearned run on 4 hits, 2 walks and 8 strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched. From the start Contreras had Diamondback batters off balanced and he looked like the budding ace that he is.

Saturday’s victory was capped off by a walk off home run by Jack Suwinski. Suwinski’s first career walk off home run brought his total on the season to 6, which leads all National League rookies. This came after Suwinski had a 3 hit performance Friday night and collected a pair of doubles on Sunday.

Cal Mitchell hit a double on Saturday while hitting his first career home run on Sunday. Diego Castillo had a vital sacrifice fly on Sunday while continue to play plus defense as a middle infielder. Tucupita Marcano started all three games, walking 3 times and hitting a double. While he did not play in the game, former first-round pick Travis Swaggerty was promoted to the majors on Sunday.

The youth movement is one in full force in Pittsburgh. It has not just made the Pittsburgh Pirates more fun and exciting to watch, it has also made them a better baseball team. Hopefully this will only continue in the coming weeks with the additions of Oneil Cruz, Ji-Hwan Bae and Cody Bolton, among thers.
