The Pittsburgh Pirates have finally started calling up a lot of their prospects.  They now appear ready to call up one of their most highly rated.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are once again calling up a player straight from Double-A Altoona.  Liover Peguero will skip Triple-A for now and is reportedly on his way to join the Big League Club. This is obviously exciting news as Peguero is one of the premier names in the Bucs system. Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic had the news:

Peguero deserved a promotion.  I wrote about him needing to be bumped up earlier this week.  My thought was that he would get promoted to Triple-A to replace Cruz who would be on the Big League roster.  That is not the case and instead, Peguero is going to get that aggressive push that we have seen this Front Office do with other Double-A prospects.

This year Peguero is slashing .292/.315/.469 across 54 games with the Altoona Curve.  He is a versatile player who has very good speed and athleticism which gives him position flexibility.  Obviously, he is a shortstop first, so it will be interesting to see if that is the position he will be see time at or not.

Many thought it would be Oneil Cruz joining the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Both the Big League team and the Triple-A team waited to post their lineups interestingly enough.  Still, Peguero is a very big piece of this team’s future.  Peguero is a consensus Top 100 prospect between FanGraphs and MLB Pipeline, so there is definitely an expectation for him to perform as such.

Well, this is not the middle infielder that many expected to be called up this weekend but nonetheless, it is still very exciting.  Peguero is supposed to be a big part of this team’s future so it is important that he makes a good first impression. At the same time, it will be interesting to see what happens when players start to come back from the Injury List.
