Pittsburgh Pirates Prospects: Big Night For Henry Davis & More

Leading off for Friday’s Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup is a high scoring loss at the Triple-A level

The Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Indianapolis Indians, suffered a high scoring 11-8 loss on Friday night. Following this loss against the Memphis Red Birds, the Indians are now 34-34 on the season.

Zach Matson worked as an opener for the Indians, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Travis MacGregor then struggled in his Triple-A debut allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts and a home run in 1.1 innings pitched.

John O’Reilly followed MacGregor, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk in 3.1 innings pitched. Matt Eckelman pitched a scoreless inning, and Aaron Fletcher allowed a run on 2 hits and a strikeout in 2 innings pitched.

Continuing his rehab assignment Josh VanMeter hit leadoff for the Indians and was 0-for-4 with a walk. In the two-hole, Ji-Hwan Bae had a huge night. Bae was 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Mason Martin was 2-for-5 with a run scored and Travis Swaggerty was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Double-A Altoona secures a 1-run victory

It was an offensive first game for the Double-A Altoona Curve on Friday night. This slugfest saw the Curve come out on top by a score of 8-7. With the win, the Curve are now 32-35 on the season.

Right fielder Matt Fraizer was 2-for-6 with 2 runs scored at the top of the Curve lineup. Liover Peguero was 2-for-5, as he stays hot after returning to the Curve following a short stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Matt Gorski was 1-for-3 with a RBI and 2 walks.

2021 no. 1 overall draft pick Henry Davis started at designated hitter. Davis was 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBI and a walk. Andres Alvarez was 1-for-3 with 2 walks, and Jared Triolo was 0-for-2 with 3 walks.

Aaron Shortridge started for the Curve but struggled. He allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, a walk, a home run, and 2 strikeouts in 2 innings pitched. Bear Bellomy allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts in 3 innings pitched.

Tahnaj Thomas pitched 2 scoreless innings. He allowed a hit, did not walk a batter and struck out 3. Omar Cruz and Tyler Samaniego followed. Cruz allowed  run on 2 hits and a strikeout, while Samaniego pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

High-A blown out, Low-A rained out

What has been a poor season for the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers continued on Friday night. Following a 14-4 blow out loss against the Asheville Tourists, the Grasshoppers are now a lowly 27-39 on the season.

Sean Sullivan started for the Grasshoppers and struggled. Sullivan allowed 6 runs on 7 hits, 2 walks a home run and 3 strikeouts in just 2.2 innings pitched. Sullivan now has a 5.19 ERA on the season.

Jack Carey followed and had a strong night out of the Grasshopper bullpen. Carey pitched 3.1 innings allowing an unearned run on 3 hits no walks and 4 strikeouts. Carey now has a 3.89 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 34.1 innings pitched this season.

As for the rest of the Grasshopper bullpen things did not go as well. Logan Hofmann allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, on 2 hits, 2 walks and a home run in an inning pitched. Michell Milian did not allow a hit, but after walking 3 batters and throwing 2 wild pitches he allowed 2 runs.

For the Grasshopper offense, Fabricio Macias was 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Leadoff man Sammy Siani was 0-for-3 with a walk and Endy Rodriguez, starting at second base, was 0-for-4 with a walk.

Jacob Gonzalez was 0-for-3 with 2 walks and a run scored. Abrahan Gutierrez was 1-for-2 with 2 walks, a run scored and a RBI. Hudson Head drew 3 walks, and Ernny Ordonez drove in a run wit his lone hit.

As for the Low-A Bradenton Marauders, they were rained out against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Friday night. Due to the this the Marauders and Blue Jays will now play a doubleheader on Saturday.
