Carmen Mlodzinski and Sergio Umana have strong starts, Henry Davis keeps getting on base and more in Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup

After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, a bullpen meltdown costs the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians a victory on Wednesday night. Following an 8-5 loss agains the Nashville sound, the top farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates are now 36-36 on the season.

Working as an opener, Zach Matson started for Indy. Matson allowed a hit and issued a walk in 2 scoreless innings pitched. Travis MacGregor followed and struggled. MacGregor allowed 4 runs on 3 hits, 2 walks, a home run and 4 strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched. Matt Eckelman allowed a hit in 1.1 scoreless innings pitcher.

Hunter Stratton pitched a scoreless inning and was sent back out for a second inning of work. Stratton did not fair as well in his second inning of work, and went on to allow 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks across 1.1 innings pitched. Joe Jaques cleaned things up for the Indians pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to finish off the night.

Players making rehab starts has been the norm for Indy lately, but the lone player doing so on Wednesday night was Ben Gamel. Gamel served as the team’s designated hitter, going 0-for-4 with a walk and a RBI.

Rodolfo Castro was 1-for-4 with a solo home run, his 7th home run of the season for the Indians. Cal Mitchell went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Taylor Davis also had a 3-for-4 performance which included his 2nd double of the season and 2 RBI.

Altoona rolls to another victory

Carmen Mlodzinski, who the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted 31st overall in the 2020 MLB Draft, started for the Curve. Mlodzinski pitched 6 innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits, walk and 8 strikeouts. The runs he allowed came on a 1st inning 2-run home run by ex-Pirate John Nogowski.

With this start Mlodzinski lowered his ERA on the season to 4.17. He has now pitched 54 innings in 14 games, 13 starts, having walked 22 batters and striking out 57. If Mlodzinski can continue to pitch well he could find himself at Triple-A before the end of the season.

Tahnaj Thomas followed Mlodzinski. In 2 innings pitched out of the Curve bullpen, Thomas allowed run on 4 hits, a walk and a strikeout. Bear Bellomy pitched a scoreless 9th inning, allowing a pair of hits and striking out a pair.

Making his third rehab start, second with Altoona, Tucupita Marcano bat leadoff while starting at second base. Marcano was 1-for-4 with a walk. Catcher Henry Davis was 1-for-4 with a walk and shortstop Liover Peguero was 1-for-5 with a run scored.

Matt Gorski was 1-for-2 with his 2nd Double-A triple and 2 RBI. Jared Triolo was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Blake Sabol started in left field, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run, his 8th home run of the season, a walk and 3 runs scored. Andres Alvarez had a pair of hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored a run.

Extra innings victory for High-A Greensboro

The High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers improved to 30-40 on the season with a 6-4 victory over the Hickory Crawdads. This victory came in 10 innings, with the Grasshoppers scoring a pair of runs in the 10th.

With one out in the 10th inning Jackson Glenn hit his 6th double of the season. This was followed by the 15th double of the season form Endy Rodriguez. Each of these doubles plated a run to give the Grasshoppers a 6-4 lead.

After pitching a scoreless 9th inning, Eddy Yean returned to the mound in the bottom of the 10th. Yean walked a batter, but got a strikeout and a double play ball to end the game. Yean allowed a hit, walked a batter and struck out 3 in his 2 scoreless innings pitched.

Nick Garcia started for the Grasshoppers, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts in 5 innings pitched. He now has a 3.30 ERA in 62.2 innings pitched this season across 14 outings, 12 of which have been starts.

Righty Wandi Montout followed Garcia. Montout allowed a run on a hit, a pair of walks and a strikeout in the 6th inning. Ricky DeVito then pitched 2 scoreless innings out of the Grasshopper bullpen, issuing a walk, allowing a hit and striking out a pair.

In addition to his 10th inning double, Glenn also hit a triple. This was part of a 4-for-5 performance by Glenn. Catcher Abrahan Gutierrez was 3-for-5 while driving in a run, and first baseman Ernny Ordonez was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a RBI, and 3 runs scored.

Following an extended delay due to lightning, Low-A Bradenton suffered a loss due to a poor 9th inning

During the summertime in Florida inclement weather could pop up at any point. This was an issue that the Low-A Bradenton Marauders had to deal with on Wednesday night. With their game tied at zero and one out in the bottom of the 5th inning, lightning popped up and delayed their game.

After a long delay, the Marauders would go on to lose to the Tampa Tarpons by a score of 4-1. With the loss, Bradenton fell to 31-39 on the season.

Prior to the poor weather moved in, Sergio Umana was pitching well for the Marauders. In 5 scoreless innings pitched, Umana allowed 4 hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 3. Umana now owns a 0.90 ERA, to go with 17 strikeouts and just 5 walks in 20 innings pitched this season.

Following a long delay the game resumed with the Marauders making the final two outs of the 5th inning. Yoelvis Reyes took over on the mound in the 6th inning, and allowed a solo home run while walking a pair of batters and striking out a pair in 3 innings pitched. Mitchell Miller pitched the 9th inning and let things get away, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits.

Offensively, there was not much cooking for the Marauders. Tsung-Che Cheng went 1-for-4 with a solo home run for the lone run scored by Bradenton. Deivis Nadal was 2-for-4, Brenden Dixon and Mike Jarvis each had a hit, but that was it for the Marauder offense.
