Big games from Sergio Campana and Po-Yu Chen led the Bradenton Marauders to a victory and more in Friday’s Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup

A poor 5th inning led to the beginning of the undoing for the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians on Friday night. Following a 13-4 loss against the Nashville Sound the top farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates is now

Mike Burrows started for Indy and early on was pitching well. With two outs in the 5th inning and the Indians leading 3-0, the wheels fell off the cart for Burrows. Burrows allowed a triple- back-to-back doubles and back-to-back singles before being lifted.

When the dust settled, Burrows went from looking like he was going to throw a gem to struggling in 4.2 innings pitched. Burrows allowed 5 runs on 6 hits, a walk and 4 strikeouts in his 4.2 innings pitched.

Joe Jaques relieved Burrows, allowing a run in 1.1 innings pitched. Cristofer Melendez walked 5 batters and allowed 4 runs in just 1/3 of an inning pitched. Matt Eckelman followed Melendez, allowing 3 runs in 1 inning pitched. Zach Matson got the final two outs of the 8th inning for Indianapolis.

Continuing his rehab assignment at Triple-A Kevin Newman started at second base and was 3-for-5 with a RBI. Newman has been working regularly at second base in recent days and it appears that he could take over as the primary Pirate second baseman when he returns from the injured list.

Yoshi Tsutsugo also made another rehab start. He was 1-for-3 with a home run, 2 RBI and drew his 8th walk of his rehab assignment. Cal Mitchell and Travis Swaggerty were both 1-for-4 at the plate.

Low-A Bradenton also rebounds to secure a victory on Friday night

Capping off a 2-0 night for the Single-A affiliates of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Low-A Bradenton Marauders rebounded from a loss on Thursday night by defeating the Tampa Tarpons 5-3 on Friday night. With the victory, the Marauders are now 32-40 on the season.

The star for the Marauders on Friday night was center field Sergio Campana. Campana went 4-for-4 with his 3rd home run of the season, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI. It was a much needed night for Campana who is still hitting under .200 on the season with just a .569 OPS.

Po-Yu Chen started for the Marauders and turned in his best start of the season. In 5 scoreless innings pitched, Chen allowed a hit, did not walk a batter and struck out 3. This start was much needed for Chen who has struggled this season to the tune of a 4.84 ERA.
