The Pittsburgh Pirates are entering July with a losing record.  With that being said, they will likely look to sell at this year’s Trade Deadline.

The Trade Deadline for Major League Baseball is always a very exciting day(s).  Baseball fans look forward to this day to see what blockbuster moves may play out or what teams sit on their hands and do nothing to improve.  The Pittsburgh Pirates have been one of the more active teams at the Trade Deadline over the last few seasons, being mainly on the selling side.

With the team having a new Front Office and starting a rebuild, the fans have seen a lot of veteran players traded. Last year they traded away veterans Richard Rodriguez, Tyler Anderson, Adam Frazier, and Clay Holmes.  The team will likely look to part with some of their veteran players at this year’s deadline as well.

Now that it is July it is officially trade deadline season.  With that, MLB.com released 10 predictions for this July.  Not all of the predictions are for the Trade Deadline, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the list.  Anthony Castrovince, who wrote up the list, predicts a trade between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Yankees:

Castrovince writes and predicts:

“The Yankees will acquire Bryan Reynolds.” “If that means building a trade package around top prospects like Oswald Peraza and Jasson Dominguez, so be it. The Yankees have every reason to seize this moment.”

This is what makes this trade deadline so interesting.  Bryan Reynolds’ name has been a hot commodity over the last year or so. We know that the Pittsburgh Pirates asked for not just top prospects, but elite, top 25 prospects. The Mariners and Marlins showed interest in the past but the Bucs asked for the likes of Julio Rodriguez (SEA) and Max Meyer(MIA).

Castrovince makes a fair point that the Yankees are in a position to strike.  The Bucs have already significantly helped the Yankees get to first place, with Jameson Taillon and Clay Holmes having stellar seasons.  The two Front Offices are very familiar with one another and the Bucs should be very familiar with the Yankees’ farm system at this point.

Hopefully, the Pittsburgh Pirates do not trade Bryan Reynolds.  If they do they need to get a significant return as the articles suggest.  Still, it would be great if the team actually invested money and signed Reynolds to an extension that he deserves.

The only issue may be that as he continues to produce at a high level, his value goes up.  Reynolds will not be looking for a Ke’Bryan Hayes-like extension, he will be able to make much more money than that.  So we shall see how this plays out over the next month.
