Pittsburgh Pirates Rumors: Team Has Rejected Offers for Two Players
According to reports the Pittsburgh Pirates have rejected multiple trade offers, some described as “tempting,” for two of their best players
Trade season is here in the world of Major League Baseball. Between now and the August 2nd trading deadline the Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as the rest of baseball, will be busy as contenders look to add and teams like the Pirates look to sell off valuable pieces for young players who can help in the future.
For the Pittsburgh Pirates, veterans such as José Quintana and Ben Gamel appear to be slam dunks to be traded as both are slated to become free agents following this season. Fellow veterans such as infielder Kevin Newman, reliever Chris Stratton and first base/designated hitter Yoshi Tsutsugo could be moved as well.
However, the two names that people seem to talk about most when it comes to the Pirates and trades are center fielder Bryan Reynolds and reliever David Bednar. Reynolds and Bednar are two of the best players in all of baseball at their positions, and would undoubtedly net huge returns on the trade market.
According to Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic the Pirates have turned down “tempting” offers for both Reynolds and Bednar. Additionally, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported over the weekend that general manager Ben Cherington has been telling teams that neither player is available on the trade market.
What “tempting” is remains a mystery. Last summer when teams were asking about the availability of Reynolds rumors were floated that Cherington was seeking at least two top 100 prospects in return for the team’s start center fielder. So there is little doubt that the asking price for Reynolds remains high, as does the asking price for Bednar.
Without a doubt these offers will not stop coming between now and August 2nd. However, Cherington and the Pirates need to continue to stand pat. Reynolds is under team control through 2025 and Bednar through 2026. Both players should be viewed as core players, along with the likes of Roansy Contreras, Oneil Cruz, Ke’Bryan Hayes, etc., to help built the next Pirate contender.
