Jack Suwinski hits two home runs and more in Friday night’s Pittsburgh Pirates minor league round up

Leading off Friday night’s Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup is the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. The Indians suffered a 9-8 loss against the St. Paul Saints in 10 innings on Friday, falling to 41-47 on the season.

Jack Suwinski, who led all National League rookies in home runs with 14 before being optioned to the minors in order to manipulate his service time and prevent him from accruing a full season of service time, had a multi-home run game for the Indians. Suwinski was 2-for-4 with a walk, two home runs, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Tucupita Marcano started at second base, batting leadoff for the Indians going 1-for-5 with a RBI, a double and a run scored. Shortstop Rodolfo Castro went 2-for-5, and center fielder Ji-Hwan Bae, who continues to push for a MLB promotion, was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Carter BIsn was 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of doubles.

Zach Matson served as Indy’s opener, allowing an unearned run on a hit, a walk and a strikeout in an inning pitched. Travsi MacGregor allowed 6 runs, 5 eanred, on four hits, a walk, a home run, and three strikeouts in 2 innings pitched.

Noe Toribio allowed a hit, did nto walk a batter and struck out six in 3 scoreless innings pitched. John O’Reilly allowed a run in his inning pitched, and Austin Brice pitched 2 innings allowing an unearned run.

Double-A Altoona comes up short

Friday night the Double-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Altoona Curve, lost to the Harrisburg Senators 7-5. With the loss, the Curve are now two games over .500 on the season at 45-42.

Third baseman Jared Triolo bat leadoff for the Curve, going 1-for-5 with a run scored. Second baseman Andres Alvarez hit second with catcher Blake Sabol in the three-hole, both were 1-for-4  with a run scored. Alvarez also drew a walk and drove in a run. Alvarez’s RBI came on a solo home run, his 14th of the season.

It was also a big game for designated hitter Aaron Shackelford. Shackelford was 2-for-3 with a walk, a RBI, and two runs scored. He also hit both his 16th double and 16th home run of the season. Shortstop Liover Peguero was 1-for-3 with a walk, and outfielders Connor Scott and Fabricio Macias each had a hit as well.

Luis Ortiz started for the Curve and allowed 5 runs on seven hits, two home runs, two walks, and five strikeouts in 5 innings pitched. Jeffrey Passantino allowed an unearned run in his inning pitched, Enmanuel Mejia pitched a scoreless inning of relief before Colin Selby allowed an 8th inning run.

High-A Greensboro outslugs Hickory in a 12-10 victory

Friday night the Pittsburgh Pirates High-A affiliates, the Greensboro Grasshoppers, outslugged the Hickory Crawdads 12-10. With the high-scoring victory, the struggling Grasshoppers improved to 37-49 on the season.

We’ll start with the pitching performance for the Grasshoppers, it was a rough one. Adrian Florencio started, allowing 5 runs on eight hits, two walks, a home run, and two walks in 2.2 innings pitched.

Denny Roman followed Florencio, walking a batter and striking out three in 2.1 innings pitched. This was the lone quality pitching performance of the night for the Grasshoppers.

Jack Carey failed to record an out, allowing 4 runs on three hits including a pair of home runs. Eddy Yean allowed a run in his inning of work, and Oliver Mateo danced around a hit and two walks in a scoreless 9th inning.

First baseman Jacob Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run scored, and two RBI. Gonzalez now owns an .822 OPS at High-A. Catcher Endy Rodriguez was 0-for-3 with a walk and a RBI, and designated hitter Abrahan Gutierrez was 0-for-1 with three walks and three runs scored.

Center fielder Hudson Head and third baseman Dariel Lopez each had a three-hit performance. Lopez hit two solo home runs, giving him 14 long balls on the season. Head hit his 6th home run of the season and drove in three. Second baseman Jackson Glenn also had a multi-hit night.

Low-A Bradenton delayed for lightning in the 7th inning

As of this writing, the Bradenton Marauders were delayed due to lightning in the 7th inning. When the lightining rolled in the Marauders were trailing the Clearwater Threshers by a score of 8-7.

Valentin Linarez started for the Marauders, allowing a solo home run while striking out three batters in 2 innings pitched. Sergio Umana followed with 2 innings of his own, allowing five runs, one earned, on five hits. Carlos Lomeli and Mitchell Millers combined to allow a run on three hits in 2.2 innings pitched.

Shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng hit leadoff, going 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Left fielder Jase Bowen was also 1-for-3 with a run scored. Rodolfo Nolasco continued to hit going 1-for-4.

second baseman Maikol Escotto was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored and a RBI. Designated hitter Bubba Chandler was 1-for-3 with his 2nd double with Bradenton and a RBI. Catcher Wyatt Hendrie also had a double in the victory.
