Leading up to the Trade Deadline, there were numerous reports suggesting that a lot of teams were looking into Quintana. FanSided’s very own Robert Murray reported that two American League teams had an interest in acquiring the lefty starter. Murray said that Quintana was drawing interest from the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox. Murray posted this a week before the Trade Deadline, so relatively early in the process.
Once the New York Yankees made the move for Frankie Montas it was assumed that they were likely out on the Jose Quintana front. Actually, in the last 48 hours or so before the Trade Deadline, there really were not a whole lot of rumors surrounding Quintana. That is of course until the deal with the Cardinals started to come through.
After the trade was done another report came out from Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Nightengale has been a long-time Baseball writer and is typically very active in reporting things during this time of year. He confirmed that the Chicago White Sox did indeed have interest in Quintana.
Now it makes sense why the two sides did not match up on a deal. The White Sox have very limited talent in their farm system and likely were not willing to deal from their major league roster like the Cardinals did with Oviedo. Who knows if the White Sox ever made a formal run or offer at acquiring Quintana, but if they did the Cardinals must have been offering a much better deal.
