Pittsburgh Pirates Prospects: Johan Oviedo Pitches Well & More
Johan Oviedo pitched well in a start for Triple-A Indianapolis, Low-A plays a doubleheader and more in Sunday’s Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup
Sunday afternoon the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians got back over .500 on the season. The top farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Iowa Cubs 8-2, to improve to 58-57 on the 2022 season.
Johan Oviedo started for the Indians as the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to work to stretch him back out a starting pitcher. Oviedo impressed, allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings pitched. He did not walk a batter, retired nine of the 10 batters he faced and struck out 10. Oviedo has now pitched 7.2 innings since joining the Pirate organization, he’s allowed just one run on four hits, two walks and nine strikeouts.
Cody Bolton followed Oviedo and struggled at times. Bolton allowed 2 runs on three hits and two walks in 2 innings pitched. He also struck out three Iowa batters. Cam Alldred struck a batter out in 1.1 scoreless innings pitched, Travis MacGregor and Zach Matson combined to strikeout three batters in 3 scoreless innings pitched.
Hoy Park started at second base for the Indians and hit a solo home run, giving him 7 on the season at Triple-A. Catcher Carter Bins was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, his 8th Triple-A home run and two RBI. Travis Swaggerty was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while first baseman Brendt Citta was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
High-A gets cancelled, Low-A Bradenton plays two
Sunday saw the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers get their game cancelled due to field conditions and Double-A Altoona rained out. Meanwhile, the Bradenton Marauders play a doubleheader against the Tampa Tarpons. Game one of the day saw the Low-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates lose by a score of 7-4.
Po-Yu Chen started for the Marauders and pitched 3.2 innings. Chen allowed 2 runs on six hits, two walks and three strikeouts. On the season he now owns a 4.68 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 90.1 innings pitched.
Yunior Thibo picked up the other 2.1 innings for the Marauders. Thibo took his lumps allowed 5 runs on five hits, two walks and a strikeout. This outing spiked Thibo’s ERA on the season to 4.87 in 44.1 innings pitched.
Shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng bat leadoff in game one and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and his 7th triple of the season. Tres Gonzalez was 1-for-4 with a run scored, Tanner Tredaway was 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, and catcher Wyatt Hendrie was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Joelvis Del Rosario started game two of Bradenton’s doubleheader. Led by Del Rosario’s strong outing the Marauders picked up a 3-2 victory to improve to 59-54 on the season.
Del Rosario allowed 2 runs o five hits, three walks and six strikeouts in 5 innings pitched. Quietly, the 21-year-old righty has had a strong season posting a 3.69 ERA in 71 innings pitched across 16 outings, 15 of which have been starts.
Brenden Dixon started the scoring in game two with a solo home run, his 8th of the season, in the 2nd inning. Later in the inning, the Marauders scored on an infield hit by Jasiah Dixon to make the score 2-0 Marauders. Juan Jerez would hit a solo home run in the 4th inning, this game the Marauders a 3-2 lead and Jerez 6 home runs on the season.
Wilkin Ramos was first up in relief of Del Rosario. Ramos allowed a hit in a scoreless 6th inning. Carlos Lomeli took over in the 7th inning and fired a 1-2-3 inning to slam the door shut on the Tarpons in a 3-2 Marauder victory.
