Pittsburgh Pirates Prospects: Quinn Priester Continues to Dominate & More

Quinn Priester dominates again, an extra innings walk-off victory for Greensboro and more in Saturday’s Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup

The Indianapolis Indians have now won four games in a row. Following a 4-1 victory over the Louisville Bats on Saturday night, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates have ridden this recent hot stretch to a 66-60 record.

Hoy Park started at second base and bat leadoff for the Indians. Park went 3-for-4 with his 9th home run of the season, two runs scored and two RBI. Diego Castillo was 1-for-4 with a double and Ji-Hwan Bae was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Travis Swaggerty hit his 14th double of the season, and Blake Sabol was 2-for-4. Sabol now owns a 1.009 OPS since being promoted to Triple-A.

Osvaldo Bido started for the Indians and pitched 6 masterful innings. Bido allowed just one hit, walked a batter and struck out seven. This came as he shut the Bat offense out across his 6 innings pitched.

Cody Bolton was then summoned out of the Indian bullpen. Bolton allowed a solo home run in his lone inning of work. However, he did not walk a batter and still struck out a pair while pitching the 7th inning.

Quinn Priester dazzles once again

Saturday night the Double-A Altoona Curve rolled past the Akron RubberDucks 7-1. Altoona’s victory was sparked by another dominant start from arguably the Pittsburgh Pirates top pitching prospect, as well as plenty of offense. The win improved the Curve to 62-62 on the season.

Quinn Priester started for Altoona and continued to dominate Double-A batters. In 6 innings pitched Priester allowed a run on three hits, a walk and four strikeouts. Priester now owns a 2.37 ERA to go with 65 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched in 13 starts for Altoona this season.

Enmanuel Mejia followed Priester and pitched 2 innings. Mejia did not allow a hit or a run, while walking a batter and striking out 3. Austin Roberts then walked a batter and struck out two in a scoreless inning pitched.

Liover Peguero had a much needed big game going 4-for-5 at the top of the Curve lineup with two runs scored and two RBI. Nick Gonzales was 1-for-3 with two walks, his 6th home run of the season and two RBI, improving his OPS on the season to .798.

Aaron Shackelford and Lolo Sanchez were both 2-for-4, each of them scored a run and Sanchez drove in a run. Connor Scott was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.

Greensboro walks-off Winston-Salem in extra innings

It took extra innings, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers were able to earn a victory on Saturday night. Following a 3-2 walk-off victory in 10 innings over the Winston-Salem Dash, the High-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates are ow 56-66 on the season.

Jared Jones started for the Grasshoppers. Jones allowed 2 runs on three hits, a walk and seven strikeouts in 4 innings pitched. It has not been the season Jones was looking for, owning a 4.63 ERA in 118.2 innings pitched across 25 starts. However, he has still flashed his plus stuff racking up 139 strikeouts and easily remains a top 15 prospect in the system.

Cristian Charle followed Jones, walking a batter and striking out a pair in 2 scoreless, hitless innings pitched. Eddy Yean also pitched 2 innings of no-hit scoreless ball. Yean walked a batter and struck out three. Cam Junker then joined the 2 innings of no-hit scoreless ball club, while walking a batter and striking out four.

It did not take the Grasshopper long to walk it off in the bottom of the 10th inning. With Eli Wilson on second base as the extra innings runner, Ernny Ordonez laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jackson Glenn then doubled Wilson home to give the Grasshoppers a 3-2 lead.

Left fielder Jase Bowen finished the game 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and a RBI. Wilson had a hit, driving in a run and scoring a run. Hudson Head went 1-for-4 and shortstop Mike Jarvis finished the night 1-for-3.

Bradenton falls behind early in loss

The Low-A Bradenton Marauders fell to the Fort Myers Might Mussels 6-3 on Saturday night. This came after the Marauders fell into a big hole early, as they trailed 4-0 after the 2nd inning of the game.

Joelvis Del Rosario started for the Marauders and had a rare poor start. Del Rosario allowed 6 runs on six hits, a walk, a home run and three strikeouts in 5 innings pitched. That said, only 2 of the 6 runs that Del Rosario allowed were earned.

Will Kobos followed Del Rosario. Kobos allowed two hits and struck a batter out in 2 scoreless innings pitched. Drew Irvine would pitched 2 innings, he walked a batter, struck a batter out and did not allow a hit while posting a zero.

Tsung-Che Cheng was 1-for-4 with a walk, his 25th double of the season, a run scored and two RBI. Catcher Wyatt Hendrie was 2-for-3 with a walk and outfielder Tres Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Center fielder Sergio Campana had the only other hit for Bradenton.
