In Tuesday evening’s AFL action Omar Cruz pitched 2 scoreless innings while Pittsburgh Pirates position players prospects in a Surprise Saguaros loss

Following the league wide day off on Monday, the Surprise Saguaros returned to Arizona Fall League play on Tuesday evening. In Tuesday night’s contest the Saguaros had a pair of Pittsburgh Pirates prospects in their starting lineup.

The two Pirate prospects who were in Surprise’s starting lineup on Tuesday were Nick Gonzales and Blake Sabol. Gonzales made the start at second base, while the versatile Sabol made a start in left field.

Entering the night Gonzales had been one of the best hitters for the Saguaros, as well as one of the best hitters in the AFL thus far. Well, Tuesday night Gonzales had a rare poor performance as he went 0-for-4 at the plate. This 0-for-4 performance included a trio of strikeouts. Sabol was also 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Omar Cruz, who has pitched extremely well for the Saguaros thus far, made his fourth appearance of the AFL season on Monday. Cruz continued to pitch well, allowing a hit while pitching a scoreless 6th inning.

Cruz took the mound in the 7th inning for a second inning of work. After allowing a base hit to start the inning, Cruz induced a double play ball off the bat of highly touted Rockie prospect Zac Veen. He then struck out Jordan Lawlar, the 6th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, to end the 7th inning.

In 7.2 innings pitched in the AFL the lefty now owns a 1.17 ERA. He has allowed four hits, walked six batters and struck out six.
