Pittsburgh Pirates: Roster Projection Entering December
As the calendar flips to December there is a lot of roster tweaking to be done. But what would the Pittsburgh Pirates Opening Day roster look like right now?
For their normal standards the Pittsburgh Pirates have been busy this offseason. Thus far, they have traded away Kevin Newman while trading for Ji-Man Choi. They have also signed veteran first baseman Carlos Santana.
While general manager Ben Cherington has done a good job addressing first base/designated hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates, there is still work to be done by him this offseason. Catcher, starting pitching, relief pitching, and the outfield remain positions of need.
That said, it’s never too early to begin attempting to project the team’s Opening Day roaster. We will do that today, taking a look at what the Pirate Opening Day lineup would look like with players currently on the 40-man roster.
Starting rotation
There may not be a group on the Pirate roster that looks more different come Opening Day than the starting rotation. Right now, Mitch Keller, Roansy Contreras, and Johan Oviedo appear to be locks for the team’s Opening Day rotation.
Behind these three, however, questions run wild.
At some point in 2023 Quinn Priester and Mike Burrows should join the team’s starting rotation. Luis Ortiz should be in this mix as well. Until then, Cherington will have to help give Derek Shelton ammo for the team’s starting rotation. As of now these final two spots would likely go to righties JT Brubaker and Bryse Wilson.
Brubaker was the Opening Day starter for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season and put together an overall quality season. As for Wilson, after struggle for much of the season he was able to finish on a high note.
That said, odds are, the Pirates will add multiple starting pitchers between now and Opening Day. This could lead to Brubaker being moved to the bullpen, or potentially traded, while Wilson could be moved to the bullpen, designated for assignment, or simply start the season at Triple-a Indianapolis.
Position Players
This is another group that will likely see another addition or two between now and Opening Day. For the most part, things are pretty set in stone. Ke’Bryan Hayes will be at third base, Oneil Cruz shortstop, Bryan Reynolds will be in center field, and Jack Suwisnki will man a corner outfield spot.
The aforementioned duo of Santana and Choi will be at first base/designated hitter. Miguel Andújar will start at one of these two positions against left-handed pitching. Rodolfo Castro is likely to be at second base.
All of that said, the Pittsburgh Pirates still need ot figure out the catcher position. If nothing else, they need to find someone to play behind the dish until Endy Rodriguez and/or Henry Davis are MLB ready at some point in 2023. They could use a right-handed hitting outfielder, and seeing an addition in the form of a utility bench player would not be a surprise either. But depending on how the rest of the offseason shakes out, Ji Hwan Bae could be the super utility man.
With who is currently on the 40-man roster, this would be the projected Opening Day position player group for the Pirates.

It should be noted that Rodriguez is only projected with this group due to being one of only two catchers currently on the Pirate 40-man roster. The odds of Rodriguez actually being on the Opening Day roster are pretty close to zero.
The Bullpen
There is no bigger question mark about the 2023 Pittsburgh Pirates than their bullpen. During the 2022 season the Pirate bullpen was one of the worst in baseball. Thus far, no additions have been made to change the outlook of this group.
Now, additions will be made. To be honest, additions have to be made. The Pirates currently have zero left-handed pitchers on their 40-man roster. This is not sustainable in any fashion, but especially for the bullpen. Left-handed bullpen help will be added in soem fashion before Opening Day.
David Bednar is of course a lock for the Opening Day bullpen. Despite some hiccups prior to an injured list stint last season, the All-Star reliever is one of the best in baseball. Wil Crowe struggled in the second half last season, but is likely a lock for the Opening Day bullpen. The same goes for Robert Stephenson who pitched very well after being claimed off waivers for the Pirates last season, as well as Colin Holderman who was acquired in the Daniel Vogelbach trade. Chase De Jong is likely in a good spot as well following a career year in 2022.
After these five, any other relief options are liable to lose their spots as additions are made to the bullpen. That said, Yohan Ramirez and Yerry De Los Santos should be in a good spot to crack the Opening Day bullpen. Even if they do not, they’ll be the first men up from the minors.

Hell, depending on when you read this the outlook for the Opening Day roster may already look different. That said, it is still a fun exercise to view where the projected Opening Day roster currently stands and watch that change and evolve as the offseason unfolds.
What’s most important, however, is that as currently constructed this group appears to be better than the group that broke camp with the Pirates in 2022.
