It's a new year, which means there's more baseball on the way. The Pirates have an incomplete roster at the moment, but they still have a lot of interesting players to watch for in 2025. There are a lot of floating possibilities regarding what could happen in Pittsburgh this season, but these five Pirates predictions to start the new year still feel realistic, given what we know now.

These five Pirates predictions are very much in play for 2025.

David Bednar rebounds

One of the biggest letdowns in 2024 was two time All-Star closer David Bednar completely falling apart. He was unreliable as the team's closer, which ended up resulting in Aroldis Chapman finishing the season out in the role. Bednar struggled with injuries all year, so a healthy arm could bring him back to his elite self.

In that three-year window where he was elite, Bednar posted an earned run average of 2.25 with a WHIP of 1.06 across 179.2 innings pitched. He struck out 226 batters and picked up 61 saves. Considering how many games those Pirates teams actually won, that amount of saves is solid. The Pirates need him to rebound in 2025 and, with his past, there is a great chance that he does.

Oneil Cruz puts together 30/30 season

In his first full season of Major League Baseball, Oneil Cruz had a great season. He accomplished an impressive accolade, hitting and running himself into the 20 home run/20 stolen base club. One bold prediction for Cruz is that he reaches this mark once again, but with at least 30 of each.

Getting into the 30/30 club is very realistic for Cruz, who has sprint speed ranked in the 88th percentile, while his average exit velocity, bat speed, barrel%, and hard-hit% all rank within the top 3% of the league. It would be a major accolade for Cruz to get in the 30/30 club and it seems realistic.

Paul Skenes starts the All-Star Game again

After less than a dozen starts, Paul Skenes was named the National Leauge's starting pitcher for the All-Star Game in 2024. He finished the season by winning the Rookie of the Year and finishing third in Cy Young voting. His first season in Major League Baseball was incredible, but he can build on that, as he is already the favorite to win the 2025 Cy Young award.

Although there is a strong chance he wins that award, a safer, realistic prediction for Skenes is to start the All-Star Game again in 2025. If he puts up another sub-2.00 earned run average and a sub-1.00 WHIP, then he should easily get selected for this event (and top honor) once again.

Ke'Bryan Hayes improves at the plate

Like Bednar, Ke'Bryan Hayes fell apart in 2024, and injuries were a major part of his slide. He struggled tremendously with Andy Haines, who was fired and replaced with Matt Hague this offseason. Givenwhat Hayes lacked in 2024, Hague seems like a guy that can fix him and make him productive once again.

Last season, Hayes put together a wRC+ of 59 with an OPS of .573. Those are just two stats that show he was among one of the worst hitters in all of baseball. In 2023, when he worked with Jon Nunnally privately, his wRC+ was at the league average of 100 and his OPS reached .762. A new voice should positively impact Hayes and help him improve at the plate.

Nick Gonzales becomes a top-five hitter in the lineup

In 2024, Nick Gonzales took major steps forward towards becoming a decent hitter at the plate. He went from putting together a poor rookie season to a slightly below average sophomore year. Although he is still not quite above-average at the plate, his progression trend appears to put him in position to become a top-five hitter on the Pirates in 2025.

He made a jump from a 63 wRC+ to a 94, a .616 OPS to .709, and saw his strikeout rate drop from 28.1% to 19.1%. Those numbers will be crucial towards evaluating his value, as striking out has always been an issue for him. If his positive trend continues, Gonzales could emerge as one of the best hitters in the Pirates lineup and that feels realistic, given his showing in 2024.
