It’s not uncommon to see Pittsburgh's PNC Park ranked among the best ballparks in baseball. Just last week USA Today’s Bob Nightengale declared the stadium the “most gorgeous” in America. Sweeping views of the Pittsburgh skyline and the atmosphere on Federal Street almost make up for the frequently dismal onfield performance of the home team.

This gem needs to be on baseball’s biggest stage, and with no World Series run for the Pirates in sight, the All-Star Game is the next best thing.

It would be fair to complain that PNC Park has already been the host of the Midsummer Classic while other celebrated venues, like Fenway Park and Oriole Park at Camden Yards, have had longer droughts. But with the announcement that Oracle Park in San Francisco is getting the 2028 nod, PNC Park should be firmly back in play. After all, San Francisco last hosted the game in 2007, a year after Pittsburgh last hosted.

The 2029 All-Star weekend would be the perfect opportunity to honor both the history and the present of Pirates baseball.

Pirates should make a push to host 2029 MLB All-Star Game at PNC Park

I won’t have to remind Pirates fans that a significant milestone is looming. In 2029, the Pirates will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the “We Are Family” 1979 World Series championship, the franchise’s most recent title and among the most iconic teams in baseball history.

Imagine Bert Blyleven and John Candelaria chatting it up with Paul Skenes and Jared Jones, or Tim Foli talking shortstop with Konnor Griffin. With 20 of the 1979 Pirates still with us, the opportunities for connection and reflection abound.

The fans would also get a chance to shine that is rarely afforded them. Thanks to the Pirates’ lack of success over the past two decades, Pittsburgh’s diehards rarely get a national audience, but when they do, they make for memorable moments. The Johnny Cueto game still gets airtime, but it’s not all razzing. Tenderness and joy also course through PNC Park.

The city of Pittsburgh is a first-rate sports town. This year’s NFL Draft proved that the area could hold a first-rate sports event. If MLB awards PNC Park an upcoming All-Star Game, everyone will walk away a winner.
