The Pittsburgh Pirates are starting to get some real momentum now. While the NL Central is the wild west at the moment, the Pirates find themselves with a 26-24 record after beating St. Louis on Thursday and very much still in the hunt for a playoff spot. While the Pirates have taken great strides on offense as Konnor Griffin has gotten more comfortable, some more help in the lineup would be a big help. Well, that help is on the way.
Esmerlyn Valdez broke out in 2025 as a surprise Pirates prospect success story. After posting an .896 OPS through 123 games last season, Valdez has put up a similar .888 OPS so far in Triple-A in 2026 including 10 homers. He has looked particularly strong in his last 8-10 games.
Now, the Pirates' No. 9 overall prospect is getting called up to the majors to make his debut.
Esmerlyn Valdez is getting called up to the majors by the Pirates just in the nick of time
In Valdez, the Pirates are (hopefully) getting a guy with 60-grade raw power that could be a force in the middle of the lineup. Valdez's hit tool has made real strides and he is definitely not afraid to take a walk, but his success in the majors is going to live or die based on how much his power plays in MLB. If he can drive the ball with authority, Pittsburgh should have enough baserunners around to make those moments count.
Of course, exactly how Valdez factors into the Pirates' plans will be interesting. First base isn't really going to work, as Spencer Horowitz isn't playing poorly enough to warrant losing his spot there. Valdez has played mostly in the outfield corners this season and, well, that could mean that guys like Jake Mangum or even Bryan Reynolds could lose some playing time. The most seamless swap would be for designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, but Ozuna is making too much money to completely give up on at this point.
Whatever the Pirates plans may be, this is an exciting time in Pittsburgh. All of this time and effort that the Pirates put into developing a competitive young core is bearing fruit in front of our eyes. It looks like, for a change, the front office is looking to capitalize on it.
