Shortstop has been a whirlwind of a position for the Pirates over the last few years. Primarily, the position revolved around Oneil Cruz, but with his injury in 2023, it forced other guys to step up and became a total mess. After all of that, Cruz is not even a shortstop anymore, and now the Pirates will be rolling with a trade deadline acquisition who will be a free agent after the season.

Let's examine what the group looks like throughout the organization as the 2025 season gets underway.

The Pirates have a strong group of shortstops throughout the organization.

Pittsburgh: Isiah Kiner-Falefa

After being acquired at the 2024 trade deadline, Isiah Kiner-Falefa took the place of Oneil Cruz at shortstop. He is back again in 2025, and will look to use his elite glove for Pittsburgh and contribute with a more contact-focused bat, possibly in the leadoff role or late in the lineup. Last season, Kiner-Falefa put together a wRC+ of 93 with an OPS of .683 and struck out at a 15.7% clip. He's batting ninth on Opening Day in Miami.

Indianapolis: Liover Peguero

Liover Peguero is a former top-ranked prospect via MLB Pipeline's Top 100 rankings. At this point, he is no longer a prospect, and has struggled recently at Triple-A. It is not likely that he is the immediate backup shortstop, but he could see some time with the big club in 2025. In 2024, Peguero produced an OPS of .729 while belting 13 home runs and a wRC+ of 88.

Altoona: Jack Brannigan and Mitch Jebb

MLB Pipeline has Jack Brannigan ranked as the 11th-best prospect in the organization after a solid season in Greensboro. He is set to move up to Altoona as a breakout candidate, and shortstop seems like the ideal position for him, given how the team shapes up (despite spending last season at third base). In 2024, his wRC+ reached 135, stemming from his 18 home runs and .834 OPS.

Another option at shortstop (who may see time at other positions, too) is Mitch Jebb, the Pirates' 13th-ranked prospect from MLB Pipeline. He has been a pure contact guy his entire career, and finds ways to generate runs through his speed and plate discipline. He stole 42 bases last season, while creating a wRC+ of 104 and striking out just 19.1% of the time.

Greensboro: Jhonny Severino

One of the more sneaky solid prospects in the organization is Jhonny Severino. MLB Pipeline has him ranked 12th at 20 years old. He brings a lot of tools to work with, and he displayed that in rookie ball and with Bradenton last season. Last season, Severino belted 16 home runs and stole 16 bases to produce a wRC+ of 131 and an OPS of .869.

Bradenton: Konnor Griffin, Wyatt Sanford, and Yordany De Los Santos

The Pirates' top offensive prospect will likely start the year in Bradenton after a solid showing in spring training. Konnor Griffin was very impressive, belting a home run, stealing a bag, and showing off his defenisve ability in the outfield. He is still just 18 years old. 2025 will be very fun for the star prospect.

Wyatt Sanford is another prep shortstop the Pirates took in the 2024 draft. He also did not debut last season, and should definitely see an opportunity in 2025. He may start in rookie ball, but there’s a good chance he gets a shot in Bradenton quickly. Sanford is also a high-ranked prospect, as the eighth-best in the organization entering 2025, according to MLB Pipeline.

Lastly is Yordany De Los Santos, Pipeline's 16th-ranked prospect. He struggled in Bradenton last season, posting a wRC+ of 72 with a home run and a .564 OPS. He was much better in rookie ball, but he needs consistency as he moves up. He just turned 20 years old, so he still has a lot of time in front of him, and he is another exciting shortstop to watch out for.
