When it comes to prospects, the Pittsburgh Pirates have a growing reputation for their ability to identify and develop pitching. However, it's hard not to also keep an eye on shortstop/outfielder Konnor Griffin, who they selected ninth overall in the 2024 draft and is ranked second in the organization's farm system by MLB Pipeline.
Griffin's scouting report is glowing; he's viewed as having the loudest tools out of the entire 2024 draft class and carries genuine five-tool potential. Not that he doesn't still have plenty to work on to fulfill this potential, with his hit tool currently perceived as the area that needs the most development, specifically the length in his swing and some timing issues.
Pirates' Konnor Griffin becoming a sight to behold
Well, it would appear that the 19-year-old is developing just fine with his hitting, at least based on recent events in Single-A Bradenton. He started off the season well enough with the Marauders, but has seen his bat heat up of late:

Griffin's six recent extra-base hits are comprised of three home runs and three doubles, contributing towards 10 extra base hits in total on the season. Through 20 games for the Marauders, he has five home runs, 15 RBI and six walks, as part of a .265/.333/.518 slash line.
Is there potential for Konnor Griffin to play for the Pirates ahead of schedule?
The Jacksonville, Mississippi native is currently not projected to reach the majors until 2028, but you have to at least wonder if he will possibly make it earlier, no matter how unlikely this scenario might seem. He already looks the part at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, with a strong arm, excellent speed and sound fielding.
If Griffin continues to gain more confidence and productivity with his bat -- and why wouldn't he? -- then you really will have a player who is capable of enjoying a long and prosperous career at the very highest level. And on top of everything else, he has the skill level to be able to play in any number of positions on the field as the Pirates see fit.
Fans in Pittsburgh have endured a lot over the past three decades, fittingly (and depressingly) summed up by The Athletic ranking the Pirates as the worst MLB franchise of the 21st century. However, with the likes of Paul Skenes on the team and Bubba Chandler nearly ready, better days seem ahead and only become even more encouraging when you add Griffin into the equation.
