In recent years, there have been various players win defensive awards throughout the Pirates organization. Just a season ago, Pirates third baseman, Ke'Bryan Hayes dethroned Nolan Arenado and won the Gold Glove at third base. Just a few years prior, Jacob Stallings won the award in Pittsburgh at catcher.

Once again, the Pirates have a finalist for the Gold Glove Award as Jared Triolo was named one of the final three possible winners for the award as a utility player. In 2024, Triolo saw innings at first base, second base, shortstop, third base, and right field.

Pirates infielder Jared Triolo is a Gold Glove award finalist as a utility man

Triolo has always been known as a defense-first player. In 2021, he won the Rawlings minor leauge Gold Glove. Now, he has the opportunity to win another one, but this time at the Major League level.

He was on the big league roster all season, but he did not remain consistent at one specific position due to his inconsistencies at the plate and other players dealing with injuries. Triolo started the season as the Opening Day second baseman for the Pirates and committed just one error in 374.2 innings. He saved six defensive runs, recorded one out above average and had a fielding run value of 1.

When Hayes landed on the IL, Triolo saw a lot of innings at third base, which ended up being the position he played most at 527 innings. There, he committed just two errors with two defensive runs saved, two outs above average and a fielding run value of 2.

He did not play much at first base, but when Triolo was put there, he was productive. In just 41 innings, he had one out above average and had a fielding run value of 1.

Shortstop was Triolo's statistically worst position, as his -2 defensive runs saved and -1 outs above average translated to a -1 fielding run value.

Overall, Triolo had a very impressive season at multiple positions, resulting in him being a finalist for the Gold Glove for utility players. Pirates fans will find out if they have another award winner on November 3rd.
