While the 2025 season hasn't gone as well as they hoped so far, there are some signs of life from the Pittsburgh Pirates after they took the step to fire Derek Shelton. They just won their series over the Reds and are going up against a Brewers squad that struggles to score runs for a four game set this weekend. Unfortunately, the first game of that series is being interrupted by some crummy weather in the area.
It has been a particularly rainy start to the baseball season this year with multiple big waves of storms rolling through, especially in the eastern half of the US, and causing all sorts of disruptions to the MLB schedule including the Pirates who have had to deal with plenty of weather delays. Sadly, more storms have been rolling through this week including Thursday and Pittsburgh's matchup with Milwaukee is officially in a rain delay in the sixth inning.
**Update: 9:38 PM EST**
After a little over an hour of a rain delay, word has gotten out that the Pirates vs. Brewers will resume at around 10 PM EST in the bottom of the sixth inning. Let's see if Pittsburgh can get back in this game.
Pirates vs. Brewers Rain Delay, 5/22 - When will the game get started?
This delay is particularly difficult to make any guesses about. The issue is that there is a lot of scattered rain in the area that is sort of swirling out of Ohio and into Pennsylvania and it sort of seems like that is going to continue for a while. That said, there does seem to be opportunities for weather windows to get this game in, so they are going to at least try to see if the weather clears up at all in the next hour or so.
Unfortunately, there is a decent chance that this game just gets called if things don't resolve themselves relatively quickly. With a four game series against the Brewers here including a pair of weekend games, it would be relatively easy to justify calling this game pretty quickly in Milwaukee's favor at 5-3 and then just moving on with everyone's lives instead of prolonging this game.
This post will be updated as more details are made available from the team as to when this game will get started (if at all) as well as any changes to the forecast for this evening. Hopefully this game ends up happening and the field is in good enough shape to not be a total dumpster fire when it gets underway.
