Pittsburgh Pirates: 2024 Presents a Great Opportunity for Liover Peguero
Appearing to be the frontrunner for the second base job, Liover Peguero could have a great opportunity with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024
Every year across baseball there are position battles in spring training. For the Pittsburgh Pirates, one battle this spring will be at second base. Liover Peguero, Ji Hwna Bae, Jared Triolo, and Nick Gonzales will be competing for the job.
The battle could go multiple ways, that's how positional battles work. That said, entering the spring could their be a favorite to win the job? Well, it appears that there is and that it is a former top 100 prospect from the group.
Entering spring training, Peguero appears to be the favorite to land the second base job. With this, opportunity will be knocking for the young hitter this season. 2024 presents the opportunity for Peguero to emerge as an every day player in the majors.
Out of the group competing for the second base job, Peguero is at worst the second best defensive second baseman of the group. Other than maybe Triolo, none of the other competitors at the position are better defensive second baseman than Peguero.
Additionally, Peguero has the biggest power potential of the group. Between the majors and the minors, Peguero hit 20 home runs last season. He collected 47 extra base hits between the majors and the minors, and the work he did in the majors put him ona 20+ home run pace over a full season's worth of plate appearances.
Even things would happen to not work out for Peguero as the starting second baseman, he could still have a future in the majors as a utility infielder. That said, both the Pirates and Peguero are hoping things work out for him as the team's second baseman.
When the 2024 season begins Peguero will likely be at second base for the Pirates. With this, opportunity will be knocking for Peguero. The 2024 season could decide if Peguero's long-term future in the majors is as a starting infielder or a utility player.
