Bryan Reynolds may be starting to heat up at the plate and more takeaways from the Pittsburgh Pirates splitting their brief two-game series with the Detroit Tigers

The Pittsburgh Pirates went into Wednesday afternoon's game against the Detroit Tigers looking for their third consecutive series victory. Unfortunately, following a 6-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon they failed to secure that series victory.

Instead, the Pirates had to settle for a series split. A series split that makes the Pirates 48-59 overall on the season and 13-18-2 in series played. Both of the series splits this season have come against the Tigers.

Next up for the Pirates is a four-game series on the road against one of their biggest NL Central foes. But before we look ahead, let's take one more look back the Tiger series. Here are three takeaways from the Pirates splitting their brief two-game series against the Tigers.

Liover Peguero continues to impress

When Liover Peguero was promoted to the majors earlier this month he started 0-for-10 with 8 strikeouts. Undoubtedly an ugly start in Peguero's return to the majors and his first opportunity to get a long look at the major league level.

Since this poor start Peguero has been one of the team's best hitters. This hot stretch of play by Peguero continued into the Detroit series. Very quickly, Peguero has hit his way into being in the lineup every day.

In Tuesday night's series opening victory Peguero was 1-for-3. This one hit was a 2-run home run, his 3rd of the season. This home run came in the bottom of the 2nd inning, extending the Pirate lead to 3-0. After that home run, the Pirates never looked back and were never threatened in a 4-1 victory.

For some reason, Peguero didn't start in Wednesday afternoon's loss. He entered in the late innings defensively, but did not get an at-bat.

Bryan Reynolds may be heating up

For much of the season, Bryan Reynolds has struggled. Even though he and the Pirates have insisted he's healthy, there have been plenty of reports from inside the Pirate clubhouse that Reynolds is battling a back issue.

Well, Reynolds may finally be starting to heat up at the plate.

After going 1-for-4 on Tuesday night, Reynolds was 3-for-5 with a run scored on Wednesday afternoon. Reynolds now owns a six-game hitting streak dating back to the end of last week's series in San Diego.

During this six-game stretch, Reynolds is 10-for-30 with a walk, 2 home runs, and he's been hit by a pitch. Hopefully, this is the start of Reynolds starting to heat up at the plate. Getting Reynolds on the track at the plate would go a long way for the Pirate offense for the rest of the season.

Rough stretch could be ahead

In recent weeks the Pirates have been playing better baseball. In their last 12 contests the Bucs are 7-5. However, there could be some very choppy waters and struggles on the horizon for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

This weekend the Bucs head to their house of horrors in Milwaukee for a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers who are competing for both the National League Central and a NL Wild Card spot.

After the Brewer series, the Pirates return home for a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves who are arguably the best team not just in the NL, but in all of baseball. That is followed up by a three-game series against the NL Central leading Cincinnati Reds.

This could be a brutal 11-game stretch for the Pirates. The Pirates currently sit at 48-59. However, after this 11-game stretch, the Pirates finding themselves15+ games under. 500 is a real possibility, if not a probability.
