Pittsburgh Pirates: Osvaldo Bido Demoted. Cody Bolton Promoted
The Pittsburgh Pirates were in need of making a pitching move Sunday after using up some arms Saturday night. The Bucs had to use 5 different arms in the game, and 4 of those pitchers threw more than 1 inning. So the bullpen definitely needs a boost.
Well, today Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweeted that a roster move was coming based on the lockerroom situation this morning:
As Jason points out this move is nothing more than moving on from a taxed arm and bringing up another who can eat up multiple innings if need be. Bido had a tough game against the Cubs on Saturday in which he would only last 2.1 innings. He ended up throwing 77 total pitches, giving up 8 earned runs on 5 hits and 5 walks.
Obviously, not what the Bucs were hoping for out of their young pitcher. Bido has been a bit up and down lately and his ERA is now over 6 on the season. So it is not a bad thing for him to hopefully reset down in Triple-A.
Meanwhile, Bolton has looked a little better each time has has been recalled. The former starting pitching prospect will look to make an impact this last stretch in August. If he does he could position himself for an extended stay this Septemeber.
Regardless, these two arms cannot be relied upon entering the 2024 season. The Pittsburgh Pirates need to bring in better pitching talent to supplement their young players. Without doing so the team will not be able to stay competitive with the current pitching depth. Hopefully, Bolton can start to put things together, but this is nothing more than a move to get through the next couple of games.
