Pittsburgh Pirates Players in the 2023 World Baseball Classic
With the World Baseball Classic returning for the first time since 2017, and the tournament starting on March 8th, rosters for competing teams have officially been announced and multiple Pirates players will be participating in this exciting event. Which Pirates players will be playing in the World Baseball Classic and what teams will they be representing next month?
Team USA: Right-Handed Pitcher David Bednar
After a strong All-Star campaign with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, fan favorite David Bednar has been named the lone Pirates player to represent Team U.S.A in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Last season, David Bednar posted an impressive 2.61 ERA, a 2.44 FIP, struck out 69 batters, only allowed 16 walks, and had a 1.12 WHIP across 51.2 innings pitched.
As the full-time closer for the Pirates, Bednar put together 19 saves, struck out 32.9% of batters faced, and was arguably the most reliable arm out of a severely inconsistent Pirates bullpen. With a dominant three-pitch mix consisting of a high 90's four-seam fastball, a solid curveball, and split-finger fastball, Bednar is bound to be a dominant reliever and could potentially close games in the World Baseball Classic for Team USA.
As one of the most exciting players on the Pirates roster, he will be fun to watch this tournament and in spring training. He will be joined by fellow NL Central players Devin Williams, Adam Wainwright, Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, and Miles Mikolas as representatives for Team USA.
Team Canada: Left-Handed Pitcher Rob Zastryzny
Earlier in the offseason, the Pittsburgh Pirates signed veteran left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny to a minor league deal, and was recently added to the Non-Roster Invitee list for spring training. Zastryzny has bounced around the league with the Cubs, Dodgers, Marlins, Mets, and Angels in his career and hasn't produced well at the Major League level, posting a combined 4.66ERA across 38.2 innings pitched. Left-handed pitching depth was an absolute necessity and Zastryzny fits that role nicely in Triple-A.
Prior to being drafted in the 2nd round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs, Zastryzny was born in Edmonton, Canada. As a Canadian-born baseball player, the 30-year-old will be representing Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic.
Team Dominican Republic: Right-Handed Pitcher Roansy Contreras & Left-Handed Pitcher Jarlín García
Future ace Roansy Contreras shined in his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, posting a 3.79 ERA, a 4.38 FIP. struck out 86 batters, only walked 39 batters, and had a 1.27 WHIP across 95 innings pitched and 18 starts. At just 23 years old, Contreras has a bright future with the Pirates and will be the youngest Pirates Major Leaguer in the World Baseball Classic.
Joining Contreras will be veteran left-handed pitcher Jarlín García. García was signed to a 1-year deal earlier in the offseason by the Pirates in order to add a serviceable left-handed pitcher out of the bullpen. In three seasons with the San Francisco Giants, García posted a combined 2.84 ERA, a 3.90 FIP, struck out 138 batters, only walked 43 batters, and had a 1.07 WHIP across 152 innings pitched. Last season, García limited left-handed batters to just a .198 batting average but struggled against righties and allowed 10 home runs.
Both pitchers should be great additions to Team Dominican Republic and fun players to watch in spring training.
Team Puerto Rico: Right-Handed Pitcher Duane Underwood Jr.
Following a career year in 2022 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Duane Underwood Jr. will be the lone Pirates representative for Team Puerto Rico. Last season, Underwood Jr. posted a 4.40 ERA, a 2.92 FIP, struck out 57 batters, walked 25 batters, and had a 1.45 WHIP across 57.1 innings pitched.
While Underwood's numbers aren't "All-Star" caliber, he will still be a serviceable bullpen option for Team Puerto Rico and is projected to be a contributor out of the bullpen for the Pirates this upcoming season. Best of luck to Underwood next month!
Team Italy: Right-Handed Pitcher Alessandro Ercolani & Right-Handed Pitcher Jeffrey Passantino
As the first Pirate minor leaguers on this list, both Alessandro Ercolani and Jeffrey Passantino are looking to be impact pitchers for Team Italy during this tournament. Alessandro Ercolani was an international free agent signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of the Republic of San Marino in 2021, becoming the first Sammarinesi player to sign a professional contract with a Major League organization.
Last season in the Florida Coast League, 18-year-old Alessandro Ercolani was fun to watch, posting a 1.19 ERA, a 3.83 FIP, struck out 30 batters, and a 1.29 WHIP across 30.1 innings pitched and 8 starts. He did struggle with walks, walking 15.5% of batters faced, but he did limit opposing batters to just a .184 batting average. Ercolani is the youngest Pirates player to represent a team in this tournament and has a bright future ahead of him.
27-year-old Jeffrey Passantino had a decent season out of the bullpen in Double-A Altoona, posting a 3.92 ERA, a 4.58 FIP, struck out 33 batters, walking 11 batters, and had a 1.31WHIP across 41.1 innings pitched. Both players should be regular contributors for Team Italy in the WBC.
Team Netherlands: Right-Handed Pitcher Antwone Kelly & Outfielder Josh Palacios
After being signed as an international free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Aruba in 2021, 19-year-old Antwone Kelly pitched well out of the bullpen in the Florida Coast League. In 23.1 innings pitched, Kelly posted a 2.31 ERA, a 4.13 FIP, struck out 29 batters, walked 10 batters, and had a 1.29 WHIP. For a relatively unknown prospect, Kelly impressed and is the second youngest Pirates player to represent a team in this year’s World Baseball Classic behind Alessandro Ercolani. Keep an eye on this kid in Bradenton this season.
Joining the youngster will be 27-year-old outfielder, Josh Palacios. Palacios was a former top prospect in the Blue Jays farm system who eventually landed with the Washington Nationals in 2022. Earlier in the offseason, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Palacios in the 2nd round of the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. With the Rochester Red Wings, Palacios got off to a hot start, hitting a .298/.382/.433, hit 7 home runs, drove in 44 runs, and had a 121 wRC+ across 76 games.
Palacios was also an on-base and baserunning threat, stealing 19 bases, and walking 10.4% of the time at the plate. Palacios had a brief stint in the majors with the Nationals but struggled immensely. Both players are looking to be solid contributors to Team Netherlands.
Team Chinese Taipei (Taiwan): Infielder Tsung-Che Cheng
One of our most talented infield prospects Tsung-Che Cheng will be representing Chinese Taipei in this year's World Baseball Classic. Cheng was signed as an international free agent in 2019 out of Taiwan. Last season in Low-A Bradenton, Cheng had a solid season overall, hitting .270/.376/.418, hit 6 home runs, drove in 52, and had a 129 wRC+. Cheng got on-base well, walking 13.8% of the time at the plate, hit 25 doubles, and was an insane baserunning threat, stealing 33 bases! Team Great Britain: Outfielder Chavez Young & Right-Handed Pitcher Tahnaj Thomas
After being acquired by the Pirates in the Zach Thompson trade to the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this offseason, 25-year-old Chavez Young is looking to be a speedy outfielder for Team Great Britain.
Last season in Triple-A, Young had a mediocre offensive season, posting a below-average slash line at .234/.331/.350, hit 5 home runs, drove in 21RBI, and had an 86 wRC+ in 65 games. On the bright side, Young was able to steal 20 bases that season and was able to walk 12.1% of the time at the plate. If Young improves on offense, he could be a very serviceable fourth outfielder in the future.
One of the best players on this list is 23-year-old flamethrower Tahnaj Thomas and he will be a great addition to Great Britain. After converting from a starter to a reliever at the start of the 2022 season in Double-A Altoona, Thomas found better success out of the bullpen. In 50.2 innings pitched, Thomas had a 3.02 ERA, a 3.63 FIP, struck out 52 batters, only walked 20 batters, and had a 1.26 WHIP. Thomas had a career-low 0.71 HR/9 and limited his walk percentage significantly.
While Thomas and Young are both from the Bahamas, they are representing Team Great Britain in this tournament alongside former Pirates pitcher, Vance Worley. Best of luck to these men in this tournament!
Team Colombia: Right-Handed Pitcher Santiago Florez
After struggling in recent years, the 22-year-old Santiago Florez will be representing Colombia as the lone Pirates player. Last season in High-A Greensboro, Florez pitched primarily out of the bullpen with 5 spot starts, posting a 6.50 ERA, a 5.37 FIP, struck out 61 batters, walking 29 batters, and had a very high 1.57 WHIP across 63.2 innings pitched. Even with those dreadful numbers, the kid is still young at 22 and still has time to develop in the minor leagues. Florez will be joining former Pirates players veteran left-handed pitcher José Quintana and catcher Elias Diaz.

With Spring Training just around the corner and the World Baseball Classic happening for the first time since 2017, baseball fans are going to be extremely spoiled with games before the regular season begins!
