Pittsburgh Pirates Prospects: Jackson Wolf Makes Organizational Debut & More

Jackson Wolf pitched well in his organizational debut, a Lonnie White Jr. grand slam, and more in Sunday's Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup

The Pittsburgh Pirates top farm club, the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, were rained out on Sunday. With this, Double-A Altoona was the top farm club in action. After defeating the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Saturday night, the Curve fell to Richmond 13-4 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Curve are now 48-50 on the season.

Lefty Jackson Wolf started for the Curve. Making his Pirate organizational debut after being acquired in the Rich Hill/Ji Man Choi trade, Wolf allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on two hits, a walk, and five strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. He threw 51 of 72 pitches for strikes to go with a 7:2 ground ball:fly ball out ratio.

Cam Junker followed Wolf, allowing a hit and walking a batter in 1.1 scoreless innings pitched. Michell Miliano then made his Double-A debut and struggled mightily. Miliano allowed a hit, walked three, was charged with a pitch clock violation, and was charged with 4 earned runs without recording an out.

Omar Cruz allowed a hit and issued a walk after relieving Miliano, pitching a scoreless 7th inning. Noe Toribo walked a pair, allowed three hits, and 2 runs in the 8th inning. Oliver Garcia pitched the 9th inning, allowing 5 unearned run due to an error by Claudio Finol.

At the plate, Jackson Glenn had a huge game for the Curve. Glenn was 4-for-4 with his 4th home run of the season, two RBI, and a run scored. Tsung-Che Cheng started at second base and extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 1-for-2 performance. Cheng also drew a walk, hit a sacrifice fly, and drove in a pair of runs.

Offense struggles in Greensboro loss

Entering the 9th inning the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers had scored just 1 run. Rarely is this going to be a recipe for success. On Sunday, it was not a recipe for success as an additional 9th inning run was not enough in a 4-2 loss for the Grasshoppers against the Greenville Tourists. Following the loss, the Grasshoppers are now 53-46 this season.

Sammy Siani was 1-for-3 with a walk and a RBI for the Grasshoppers. His run-scoring hit drove in Luke Brown who went 2-for-4. Jack Brannigan was 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his 3rd at Greensboro, in the 9th inning. Singles by Termarr Johnson and Malcolm Nuñez, as well as a Maikol Escotto double were the only other Grasshopper hits.

Greensboro also struggled with runners in scoring position. The Grasshoppers went 1-for-7 with RISP. They did not get a ton of scoring opportunities, but they had enough to win the game and mostly wasted them.

Thomas Harrington started for Greensboro. Harrington allowed 2 runs on three hits, two walks, a home run, and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. Yunior Thibo was created with the final out of the 4th inning, but it came when Shawn Ross threw out an attempted base stealer.

Valentin Linarez pitched 2 scoreless innings. Linarez did not allow a hit, walked a batter, and struck out three. Jack Carey allowed 2 runs on four hits and a strikeout in 2 innings pitched. Ryan Harbin allowed a hit and issued a walk, but pitched a scoreless 9th inning.

Bradenton gets out slugged by Tampa

It was a big offensvie day for the Bradenton Marauder offense, but this was not enough. The Low-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates suffered an 11-9 loss against the Tampa Tarpons. With the loss, the Marauders are now 58-43 on the season.

Lonnie White Jr. stayed hot for the Marauders. He was just 1-for-4 at the plate, but that one hit was a grand slam. This gives White Jr. 5 home runs since being promoted from the Florida Complex League to Low-A.

Deivis Nadal also went deep, hitting his 6th of the season. In addition to his home run, Nadal drew three walks and scored three runs. Yordany De Los Santos was 1-for-2, was hit by two pitches, and scored two runs. Mitch Jebb was 1-for-4 with a walk, and Jesus Castillo was 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBI, and a run scored.

Hunter Barco started for Bradenton. Making his Low-A debut, the 2022 draft pick struck out the first two batters he faced and then issued back-to-back walks. After these two walks Barco was pulled. With Barco having just recently made his professional debut after undergoing Tommy John surgery last season, hopefully it was not an injury issue for the lefty.

Miguel Fulgencio followed Barco, allowing 2 runs on two hits, two walks, a home run, and three strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched. Owen Sharts pitched 1.1 innings and Jorge Ramos pitched 1.2 innings, both of them allowed 4 runs.

Julian Bosnic pitched 2 innings. He did not allow a hit, but walked three and struck out five while allowing an unearned run. Elijah Birdsong pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning, as well as a 1-2-3 9th inning, stirking a batter out.
