Pittsburgh Pirates Prospects: Multiple Extra Base Hits For Endy Rodriguez & More
Two extra base hits for Endy Rodriguez, 7 strong innings from Anthony Solometo, and more Pittsburgh Pirates minor league action
Thursday afternoon the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians rolled over the Iowa Cubs. Led by a big offensive day, the Indians were victorious by a score of 10-5. This win improved the top farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates to 20-21 on the season.
Lefty Kent Emanuel started for Indy. He allowed 3 runs on six hits, no walks, and two strikeouts in 5 innings pitched. Emanuel threw 45 of 71 pitches for strikes and induced 10 ground ball outs in the process.
Eli Villalobos pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out a pair while retiring all six batters he faced. Carmen Mlodzinski allowed a hit and struck out a pair in a scoreless 8th inning. Colin Selby started the 9th inning, allowing 2 runs on a hit and a hit batter. Cam Alldred then allowed a hit while getting the final two outs of the 9th.
Offensively, Endy Rodriguez led the way for Indy. Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, he scored a run, and drove in a run. In recent weeks Rodriguez has been starting to heat up at the plate. Hopefully, his time in Pittbsurgh will come soon.
At the top of the Pirate lineup second baseman Nick Gonzales was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Ryan Vilade was 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, and two runs scored. Malcolm Nuñez was 2-for-4, with a double and three RBI.
Altoona hangs on for wild high scoring victory over the Bowie Baysox
Thursday saw the Altoona Curve and Bowie Baysox play a wild game. In a game that saw the Curve allow 9 runs across the final 3 innings, they hung on for a 13-11 victory over the Baysox. With the win, the Curve are now 17-17 on the season.
Liover Peguero remains red hot for the Curve. The shortstop was 3-for-6 with his 12th double of the season, two runs scored, and three RBI. Lolo Sanchez was 1-for-4 with a walk, RBI, and a run scored. Henry Davis was held to just one hit, but drove in his 21st run of the season.
Mason Martin and Claudio Finol both hit home runs for the Curve, with Martin's being a grand slam. This gives Martin 6 on the season, while Finol's home run was his 1st. Connor Scott also had a big night going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Aaron Shortridge started for the Curve and pitched well. The righty allowed 2 runs on five hits, two walks, and four strikeouts in 6 innings pitched. This outing lowered Shortridge's ERA on the season to 3.82.
The Curve bullpen, however, would have a long night.
Nick Dombkowski pitched the 7th inning and allowed a solo home run. Tyler Samaniego was summouned to pitch the 8th inning. The lefty faced five batters and did not record on an out on his way to allowing 5 runs on three hits and two walks.
Lefty Braden Ogle cleaned up the 8th inning, but not before allowing 2 runs on a home run and a walk. Things were not easy in the 9th inning for Oliver Garcia. He allowed a run, two hits, and issued a walk, but he also struck out a pair to close the game out for Altoona.
Greensboro offense stymied in 1-run loss
For much of the early part of the season the Greensboro Grasshopper offense has been very formidable. However, on Thursday, the offense of the Pirate High-A affiliate was stymied in a 2-1 loss against the Asheville Tourists to fall to 20-16 on the season.
Even though the Grasshoppers only scored 1 run they had plenty of opportunities to score more. They recorded 10 hits and drew three walks, but left 11 runners on base while going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Tsung-Che Cheng continues to swing a hot bat going 2-for-4, raising his OPS on the season to .929. Jackson Glenn was 2-for-5 with a RBI, Tres Gonzalez was 1-for-3 with a walk, and Maikol Escotto was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sammy Siani had a hit and drew two walks, Wyatt Hendrie had a base hit as well.
Anthony Solometo started for the Grasshoppers and turned in his best start of the season thus far. In 7 innings pitched, Solometo allowed 2 runs on three hits, no walks, and six strikeouts. He threw 59 of 92 pitches for a strike, and now owns a 3.68 ERA and 21:46 BB:K ratio in 36.2 innings pitched this season.
Santiago Florez pitched the final inning of the game for Greensboro, issuing a walk to go with a strikeout in a scoreless inning pitched.
Blowout loss for Low-A Bradenton
Despite grabbing a 1-0 lead after the top of the 1st inning, the Low-A Bradenton Marauders wound up getting blown out on Thursday. They allowed 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning, which was the start of a 10-3 loss against the Clearwater Threshers to fall to 20-16 on the season.
Shalin Polanco doubled in Jesus Castillo to give the Marauders their 1-0 lead. This was Polanco's lone hit of the night. Termarr Johnson stayed hot going 2-for-3 with two walks and his 1st home run of the season. After a slow start to the season, Johnson's OPS is now up to .779.
Alessandro Ercolani started for the Maraduers and lasted just 3 innings. He allowed 5 runs on five hits, three walks, a home run, and six strikeouts. Yoldin De La Paz allowed a run in 2 innings pitched, and Ryan Harbin pitched 2 scoreless innings. Elijah Birdsong finished things off by allowing 4 runs in the 8th inning.
