Altoona was rained out for a second day in a row, Termarr Johnson continues to impress, and more Pittsburgh Pirates minor league action
Triple-A Indianapolis defeated the Omaha Storm Cashers 11-4 on Sunday. With the win, the top farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates is now 42-47 on the season. A big 5th inning helped to carry the Indians to victory.
Miguel Andújar singled to start the 5th, Ryan Vilade walked, and one out walk by Aaron Shackelford loaded the bases. Grant Koch singled, Vinny Capra singled, and Josh Bissonette went deep for the 1st time this season with the Indians. Bissonette's 3-run blast capped off a 6-run inning, and made the score 9-3 Indians.
Jared Jones started for Indy and allowed 3 runs in 5 innings of work. Jones allowed six hits, a home run, did not walk a batter, and struck out six. He threw 58 of 83 pitches for strikes, while generating both four ground ball and fly ball outs.
Kyle Nicolas followed Jones and allowed a solo home run while striking a batter out in the 6th inning. Rob Zastryzny pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning, Colin Selby struck out the side in a scoreless 8th, and and Travis MacGregor danced around two base runners in a scoreless 9th.
Capra finished the game 4-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored. Alika Williams went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI, his 6th home run, and two runs scored. Canaan Smith-Njigba was 1-for-3 with two walks, Chris Owings hit his 7th home run, and Andújar was 2-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI.
Blowout win for Greensboro
Sunday afternoon saw the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers roll past the Brooklyn Cyclones 13-5. With the win, the Grasshoppers are now within one game of .500 on the season at 40-41.
At the top of the Grasshopper lineup designated hitter Tres Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a walk, double, RBI, and two runs scored. Jase Bowen went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a walk. Third baseman Shawn Ross was 1-for-4, but that lone hit was a grand slam.
Po-Yu Chen started for Greensboro and continued his season long struggles. Chen allowed 3 runs on six hits, four walks, three strikeouts, and a home run in 5 innings pitched. He now owns a 4.23 ERA this season.
Yunior Thibo walked a batter in a scoreless 6th inning, Jack Carey allowed a run in the 7th inning, and Dane Mendoza allowed a run in the 8th inning. Cy Nielson pitched the 9th inning, striking a batter out in a 1-2-3 inning.
Bradenton continues to roll
Sunday afternoon the Low-A Bradenton Marauders defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays 9-4. With the win, the Marauders are now 48-35 on the season. The victory saw the Marauders overcome some very poor defense.
Multiple errors, including one by himself, led to Wilber Dotel allowing 4 unearned runs in 5.2 innings pitched. He allowed five hits, did not walk a batter, hit a batter, and struck out five. Owen Sharts followed with 1.1 scoreless innings of work, while Miguel Fulgencio and Julian Bosnic each pitched a scoreless inning.
At the plate, Termarr Johnson continued to rake for Bradenton. Last year's first-round pick was 2-for-4 with his 9th double of the season, 11th home run, and three runs scored. The 18-year-old is up to an .878 OPS this season.
Designated hitter Jack Brannigan was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Right fielder Rodolfo Nolasco was 1-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, and first baseman Josiah Sightler was 1-for-2 with two walks, a RBI, and two runs scored. Catcher Omar Alfonzo also had a big day, going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.
