Yordany De Los Santos hit his 1st Low-A home run, Bubba Chandler turned in his second consecutive strong start at High-A, and more Pittsburgh Pirates minor league roundup

Sunday afternoon the top farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates fell to the Iowa Cubs 9-4. With the loss, the Indianapolis Indians are now 44-51 on the season.

Luis Ortiz started for Indy and struggled. Ortiz allowed 5 runs on seven hits, two walks, a home run, and five strikeouts in 4 innings pitched. John O'Reilly allowed a hit in a scoreless 5th inning and Rob Zastryzny struck out a pair of batters in a scoreless 6th inning. Duane Underwood Jr. pitched a scoreless 7th.

In the 8th inning, Juan Minaya ran into trouble. Minaya struck out the side, but not before allowing 4 runs on three hits and three walks. These four runs but the game away for the Cubs.

Chris Owings was 1-for-5 and Rodolfo Castro was 1-for-5 with a run scored. Canaan Smith-Njigba was 2-for-3 with a double, walk, RBI, and a run scored. Alika Williams continues to stay hot, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jason Delay as 1-for-4, and Miguel Andújar drew a pair of walks.

1-0 victory for Altoona

The Double-A Altoona Curve shutout the Reading Fightin Phils for a 1-0 victory on Sunday. With the win, the Curve are now 42-44 on the season.

Braxton Ashcraft started for Altoona. Ashcraft pitched 3 hitless, scoreless innings. He retired all nine batters he faced, filled the strike zone by throwing 25 of 29 pitches for strikes, and he struck out four batters. Ashcraft's comeback story continues as he has now pitched 11 scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched at Double-A.

Omar Cruz followed, allowing two hits, walking a batter, and striking out two in 3 scoreless innings pitched. Noe Toribio allowed two hits in a scoreless 7th inning and Braeden Ogle pitched a 1-2-3 8th inning. Oliver Garcia walked three batters to load the bases in the 9th, but with the help of a strikeout closed out the game.

Altoona's lone run was driven in by Mike Jarvis who went 1-for-3. Abrahan Gutierrez was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Matt Fraizer, Domingo Leyba, and Tsung-Che Cheng each had a hit as well. That was it for Curve base runners, but it was enough to secure victory.

Greensboro gets back over .500

4-run 1st and 5th innings carried the High-A Greensboro Grasshoppers to victory on Sunday. With their 8-1 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks, the Grasshoppers are now back to .500 on the season at 44-43.

Bubba Chandler started for Greensboro and flashed why he is in the discussion for being a top 100 prospect. Chandler pitched 5 scoreless innings, allowing a hit, issuing a walk, and striking out six. Chandler induced four ground ball outs and threw 40 of 58 pitches for strikes.

After struggling for much of the season Chandler now has back-to-back strong starts. In his last two starts Chandler has allowed four hits, walked four, and struck out 14 in 10.2 innings pitched. Hopefully a sign of things trending in the right direction for Chandler.

Jack Carey followed Chandler with a scoreless 6th inning. Santiago Florez allowed a solo home run in the 7th inning. Mitchell Miller issued a walk and struck a batter out in a scoreless 8th inning, Eddy Yean then struck out a pair in a scoreless 9th.

Francisco Acuna doubled to start the game, Sammy Siani singled, and Jase Bowen tripled, making the score 2-0 Grasshoppers. Jack Brannigan singled in a run later in the inning and a 4th run scored on a Wyatt Hendrie error.

WIll Matthiessen led the 5th inning off with his 10th home run of the season. Shawn Ross and Luke Brown walked, and Hendrie was hit by a ptich to load the bases. A Brenden Dixon fielders choice and an Acuna single made the score 8-0.

Late inning woes sink Brandenton

Entering the top of the 8th inning on Sunday afternoon the Low-A Bradenton Marauders held a 7-1 lead and appeard to be well on their way to victory. Well, after allowing 2 runs in the 8th inning and 8 in a dreadful 9th inning, the Marauders lost to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 11-7 to fall to 51-38 on the season.

Termarr Johnson continues to hit and get on base for the Marauders. Serving as the team's designated hitter, Johnson went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Josiah Sightler went 3-for-4 with his 6th home run of the season, a walk, two runs scored, and two RBI.

Third baseman Yordany De Los Santos also had a big game for the Marauders. De Los Santos went 3-for-4 with a double, his 1st Low-A home run, a walk, run scored, and three RBI. Catcher Geovanny Planchart also had multiple hits.

Wilber Dotel started for Bradenton and pitched well. In 5 innings pitched, he allowed a run on five hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. Luis Peralta struck out a pair in a scoreless 6th inning and Jorge Ramos pitched a scoreless 7th inning, before allowing 2 runs in the 8th.

Darvin Garcia started the 9th inning for Bradenton but was pulled after allowing all three batters he faced to reach base. Elijah Birdsong would get the three outs in the 9th, but not before allowing 5 runs on two hits, three walks, and a home run. This also led to Garcia being charged with 3 runs as the Marauders imploded.
