REPORT: Pittsburgh Pirates to Promote Henry Davis to the Majors
In a long overdue move Henry Davis is finally on his way to the majors
According to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the Pittsburgh Pirates will promote Henry Davis to the majors on Monday
It may have raised some eye brows when Henry Davis was not in the lineup for Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon. After all, Davis has been absolutely mashing the baseball since being promoted to Triple-A. Well, it appears this is because Davis is on his way to join the Pittsburgh Pirates.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey, Davis will be joining the team when they get back home to Pittsburgh on Monday.
Davis was selected no. 1 overall by the Pirates in the 2021 MLB Draft. Davis was drafted as a catcher, but has also played a lot of right field this season. With the Pirates struggling offensively at both the catcher position and right field, Davis should be able to help the offense in a variety of ways.
At Triple-A this season Davis hit for a .286/.432/.514 slash line with a 142 wRC+ in 45 plate appearances. Davis walked at a 17.8% clip with Triple-A Indy, struck out in 24.4% of his trips to the plate, and he collected 5 extra base hits to go with a .229 isolated slugging (ISO).
His success at Triple-A came after he also raked at Double-A. Between Altoona and Indianapolis this season Davis hit for a .284/.433/.541 slash line in 232 PAs. Davis posted a 161 wRC+, 17.2% walk rate, 19.8% strikeout rate, and a .257 ISO in the minors this season.
Davis will be the second player drafted by the Pirates during the Ben Cherington Era to play in the majors, joining reliever Carmen Mlodzinski who made his MLB debut over teh weekend in Milwaukee. Promoting Davis to the majors is a move that is way overdue. This move should have come a few weeks ago, but better late than never. Hopefully, Davis will be in the lineup every day and begin to solidify himself as a building block in the Pirate core.
