Report: Pittsburgh Pirates to Promote Nick Gonzales to the Majors
Another former Pirate first-round pick is on their way to the majors
2020 first-round pick Nick Gonzales is on his way to join the Pittsburgh Pirates
For the second time this week the Pittsburgh Pirates are promoting a former first-round pick to the majors. According to multiple reports, second baseman Nick Gonzales has been promoted to the major leagues.
Also, shoutout to Jim Rosati for having it on Twitter first.
At Triple-A this season Gonzales is hitting for a .257/.370/.450 slash line with a 106 wRC+. He's drawn walks at a 13.4% rate, struck out at a 28.6% rate, and owns an isolated slugging (ISO) of .193 while ranking second in the International League with 5 triples.
Gonzales will look to help a second base room that has been very poor for the Pirates. This season, Pirate second basemen have hit .244/.318/.359 with an 87 wRC+, .114 ISO, -12 Defensive Runs Saved, and -0.3 fWAR.
Moving forward, the Pirates need to be playing Gonzales at second base every day. At this point he should assume that position for the remainder of the season in an effort to find out if Gonzales can be the long-term solution at second base.
