Ben Cherington has a very crucial next few days ahead of him, as the MLB trade deadline is less than 72 hours away, and the only trade the team has made involved Adam Frazier. While some other rentals will not impact the team very much, trading a big time player like David Bednar could truly make a difference to the future of this team, especially when seeing what the rumored asking price is for the two time All-Star.
Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette came out with a very intriguing report regarding Bednar's market. Bednar's value is reportedly much higher than the typical reliever, despite getting optioned to Triple-A earlier this season.
"Per league sources, the asking price for Bednar has included, at minimum, an organization’s top-five prospect," Hiles reported. "While for some relievers this could be viewed as an ambitious goal, one league source suggests this to be a fair starting point for a player of Bednar’s caliber."
If Bednar can land the Pirates a top five-prospect as the starting point of a trade, Cherington absolutely needs to go for it. While keeping a high-caliber reliever like Bednar could help the team in 2026, the price that he is worth outweighs that possibility.
Pirates fans will love what the rumored price for David Bednar is in Noah Hiles' newest report.
The three teams that have reportedly contacted Pittsburgh about Bednar are the Tigers, Phillies, and Rangers. The best team to do a trade with would be Detroit, and it really isn't close. Texas has a weak farm system, and their top players are mainly pitchers. Philadelphia would also be worth a deal, but some of their top prospects come with some major red flags.
If that "top-five organizational prospect" comes from a deal with the Tigers, that would hint a guy like Josue Briceno would headline the return. MLB Pipeline has him as the fourth-ranked prospect in their organization, and he is having a monster season. The catcher/first baseman has generated a .960 OPS on the year with 15 home runs and a 17.6% strikeout rate. He has struggled in his first 11 games in Double-A, yet landing him would dramatically shift the trajectory of this farm system in a Bednar deal.
It stinks a little to see a hometown hero like Bednar leaving, but in this case, it would be totally worth it. This price just cannot be ignored, and to save this offense, he is a sacrifice that needs to be made, given his value.
