West Virginia Black Bears series wrap-up v. Batavia Muckdogs

The Pittsburgh Pirates Short Season-A affiliate, the West Virginia Black Bears, wrapped up their third home series of the season Monday night. The Black Bears played host to the Batavia Muckdogs, the Short-Season A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. The Black Bears entered the series with a record of 6-8, while the Muckdogs came into the series with 3-11 record.

Game 1

Game one resulted in an 4-1 loss for the Black Bears. Logan Hill led the way with three hits including a triple. Ty Moore had one hit and the lone RBI for the Black Bears. Bret Helton suffered his third loss after going just 1.1 innings and giving up three runs. Cesilio Pimentel struck out seven in 4.2 innings of relief. Eric Dorsch pitched the final three and gave up one run while striking out two and walking two. For the Muckdogs, Brad Haynal led the way with four hits including two doubles. Four other Muckdogs doubled in the game as well. Nick White went five innings and struck out four while earning his first win of the season. Jordan Hillyear picked up his first save of the season for the Muckdogs.

Game 2

Game two resulted in a 10-6 loss for the Black Bears. Starting Pitcher Hector Garcia went 1.1 innings and allowed seven runs while walking three and striking out two. Kevin Kramer, Ty Moore and Albert Baur led the way with two hits each for the Black Bears. Kramer also had two RBIs. In a game where the Black Bears trailed 7-0 after just two innings, the team showed that they weren’t going to give up. With the score 10-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Ty Moore came to the plate with one out. On what normally would be a routine single to center field, the fielder was slow getting the ball back in. Ty stretched it to a double. The Black Bears would score three runs in the inning and lose by a 10-6 score.

Game 3

Game three resulted in an 8-1 win for the Black Bears. Casey Hughston and Kevin Kramer each had two hits and one RBI. Ulises Montilla added a hit and two RBIs. Logan Hill had a hit and two RBI’s and was walked three times. Hughston, Kramer and Ty Moore each had a stolen base as well. Dario Agrazal went five innings and allowed one earned run, four hits, one walk and four strike outs. Nick Hibbing, Sean Keselica and Andy Otamendi combined for four shut out innings to close out the win for Agrazal. For the Muckdogs, Cody Poteet suffered the loss. Brad Haynal led the way with three hits for the Muckdogs. The Muckdogs also had five errors on the night.

Looking Ahead

The West Virginia Black Bears begin a six game road trip starting in Lowell to face the Spinners on Wednesday, July 8th for a three-game series. The Spinners are an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox and come from the Stedler Division of the New York Penn League. This series will be followed by a trip to Vermont to take on the Lake Monsters. The Lake Monsters are an affiliate of the Oakland A’s and also come from the Stedler Division of the New York Penn League.
